Why fasting is important before surgery? It is important to have your pet fasted before surgery. No food should be allowed after midnight before the surgery, water is usually fine. When your pet is under anaesthesia, the brain keeps the heart beating and the lungs breathing, but many other bodily functions relax. Being under anaesthesia can cause vomiting which may end up going down the trachea and into the lungs instead of down the oesophagus to the stomach, which can resu...lt in choking and aspiration pneumonia. Therefore, your pet’s stomach needs to be empty before any anaesthetic procedures with some exceptions of toy breeds, pets with medical conditions such as diabetes, and hind gut fermenters, like rabbits. Ask our veterinarians whether your pet needs to be fasted or not before your scheduled surgery date to make sure they are safe when going under. Since a physical examination alone will not identify all your pet’s health problems. Pre-anaesthetic blood testing is always recommended, and it should be done 1 week prior to the surgery. The blood-work helps our veterinarians reveal potential complications that may arise or help us change our anaesthetic protocol designed specifically for your pet. Himalayan Cats!! Yes, the pictures are amazing because they are from Carly's engagement photo shoot. Carly is our lead receptionist/assistant manager. But today our focus is on Otis, her Himalayan cat! Firstly, Himalayan cats are not from the Himalayas, they earned their name from the Himalayan rabbit due to similar colour points, with dark markings around their faces and feet. The temperature of their environment plays a role in the development of their darker markings.... Therefore, their warmer body parts (torso, neck) are white, while their cooler extremities (tail, paws, face) are dark. Although Otis looks like the true grumpy cat, he has a lovely disposition at home. The breed is sweet-tempered, intelligent, and generally very social, but they can be moody at times. They crave affection and love to be pet and groomed, except for Otis. That is why he is shaved. His worst enemy is the brush. Otis’ best friend is Marty, the bird. He loves to look at Marty while lying in the sun. His food also needs to be piled in a certain way due to his flat face so he can eat.

Seniors Tuesday!! Sidney is a 11 year old Shi-Poo. She visited us last week, had her rabies vaccine done. She tends to duck down when there is a camera in front of her which made her look really cute and innocent.

This is Echo. A 3-year-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Yes, that is the actual name for most Corgi’s, it is also the smallest herding dog breed besides the Border Collie. Echo’s owner is Sophie who is a receptionist at Mount Joy, and she rescued him 2 years ago. He is very active and loves to play fetch and go on adventures as you may see by the pictures. He is very photogenic and maybe one day he will become a famous model in the dog world. Echo’s favorite season is summer be...cause he gets to go boating and swimming. In his spare time, he loves to go to the barn with his owner and while he’s there, he watches Sophie groom and work the horses. Echo comes to the clinic and is loved by every staff member. He sometimes gets to sit at the front desk helping with payments. If you want to see Echo and his brother Oscar more, please check out their Instagram @oscarandecho.

Puppy of the week goes to Charlie!!! Charlie is a very energetic, obedient, and intelligent puppy. He was here two days ago for his first check up at Mount Joy. He had a Dhpp vaccine, but probably won’t recall it because treats are more important. Look how cute and handsome he is!! *Dhpp is a core vaccine prevents distemper, pavovirus, parainfluenza, and two types of adenovirus(hepatitis)
