Students had a little variety this week - both the future and the past. They completed the Schizophrenia Society's "Journey to Recovery Program", which provides strategies for dealing with mental illness. Another day they had a tour of neighbouring St. Micheal's Basillica and Museum (which was the first hospital in Chatham, established by three RHSJ sisters sent here from Montreal in 1869). Our program benefits from great community partners!

Morning exercises and this afternoon we made some reindeer for our Christmas trees!

As part of their course work, each class must participate in a community project. This class made care packages for our soldiers serving in Lavinia. We received word today that they have arrived and are much appreciated. It is especially nice to receive a piece of home this time of the year!

A few pictures from our first graduation class of Home Support Workers on December 4th. Thank you to our guest speakers Sara and Colin Williston of Riverbend Special Care Home and Kim Arsenault, RN Manager of our new Memory Care Unit and our caterer Brian Matheson for the lovely reception. Congratulations to the 3 graduates - Dixit, Sammi, and Tanya who we understand have all accepted employment in our community. We are now taking registrations for our next class of Home Support Workers to be scheduled in the new year.

Yesterday I had the absolute pleasure to attend a tour of the newly renovated Mount St. Joseph for their 18 memory care beds granted to them. The first floor of... one of Miramichi's fine landmarks is a beautiful new home for alzheimers patients and offers amazing services. The board of Mount St. Joseph has been working very hard for the last couple of years and I am so happy to have been a part of the process. Thanking the previous minister of Social Development and her staff and the premier for meeting with us on request and for paying the multi million dollar loan so they could move forward and reopen this beautiful building. Congrats to Debbie Walls and her staff for your dedication and I know these seniors are going to receive wonderful care! See more

Training the healthcare workers of tomorrow! Today's lesson is working safe - infection control precautions such as proper gowning and handwashing. All very important aspects of good resident care. We are very proud of our students and the work that they do!

Our current class of Resident Attendants spending time with our new residents in the Memory Care Unit. Christmas crafts and activities. Our residents are enjoying the extra attention!

The renovations for the new unit are almost complete! As part of their orientation today our new Memory Care staff treated everyone at the Mount to a delicious buffet lunch. Staff will be well prepared to meet their new residents. Lots of call from the community regarding dementia care and available beds. We are so pleased to be able to offer this new specialty service to our area!

We are very excited to announce that we began welcoming residents last week! Here is pictures of the craft we made this afternoon, nutcrackers and sugar plum fairies for our little Christmas tree!

So great to see all of the activity at the Mount again! Home Support Worker and Resident Attendant classes started on Monday and the Staff for the Memory Care Unit are doing their orientation. We are receiving calls regarding admission once the unit is completed, which we anticipate will be as early as November. A virtual tour will be available in the coming weeks. We will try and keep everyone updated as we move along.

Our Memory Care Unit is coming along. The goal is to provide the highest quality of life for people living with dementia by allowing them to participate in activities that are appropriate for their age and skill level, in a safe environment. Staff require specialized knowledge and skills as it relates to dementia and the use of socialization and recreation. The Mount has great success in this area. Our residents have benefitted from intentional activities like music therapy, exercising, Tandem bike, and our Sensory Room to name a few.
