We found these delicate mushrooms happily growing beside our compost pile up by the big barn. Aside from being complex organisms that defy the (dare we say outdated) rules of taxonomy, fungi can be notoriously difficult for the amateur mycologist to identify. With some help from the great app inaturalist we have tentatively identified these as belonging to the genus Brittlestems. #FoundInTheForestFriday #communityfarm #Caledonfarming #Palgravefarm #Nobletonfarming #farmfreshBolton

What a pretty subject for #FoundintheForestFriday! This Great Spangled Fritillary is a butterfly from the cybele family. This Great Spangled is a male, distinguished by his bright orange colour. Females exhibit a tawny and darker shade than males. It is regularly seen in company with other greater fritillaries in open fields and along roadsides. The GSF is a very fast and active flyer, it can often be closely observed feeding on nectar from a wide variety of flowers such as m...ilkweeds, thistles, purple coneflower, vetch, bergamot, ironweed, dogbane, mountain laurel, verbena, joe-pye weed, and red clover. Their host plant, aka where they lay their eggs, are plants in the violet family which grow in moist meadows and woodland edges. Through the Fall of 2019, Caledon heard from hundreds of residents, farmers, businesses, community groups and youth about how to address climate change, and ensure Caledon continues to be a great place to live. This input has helped shape the Caledon's Community Climate Change Action Plan which is on schedule to be submitted to Council in December of 2020. Members of the Caledon Community submitted videos outlining what they are doing in order to mitigate climate change. From electric vehicles to pollinator gardens, see how the community is doing their part! #Caledon #CaledonClimateChange #CaledonClimateChangeHeroes https://player.vimeo.com/video/460669412
