We say no to violence and we will save lives! We have now introduced legislation that targets gun violence and criminal activity, addresses intimate partner violence, self-harm and online hate. We also announced support for municipalities in banning handguns through bylaws, and that we will be moving forward with a buy-back program in the coming months to ensure we get banned assault-style weapons off our streets and out of the hands of violent criminals.

Happy Lunar New Year to all those celebrating in Richmond Hill and across Canada! I wish everyone celebrating have a wonderful time with families and enjoy some delicious food safely. 2021 is the year of the ox, which symbolizes positive characteristics such as diligence, persistence, and honesty. Thank you for demonstrating all these amazing qualities during the pandemic, and I hope we will have a much better year ahead. Gong hey Fat Choy, Shen Ti Gian Kang!

Women and Gender Equality Canada will provide $100 million to support women who have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, the funding will be directed to support marginalized or underrepresented people, including Indigenous women, Black women, women of colour, women who are members of LGBTQ2 communities, and women living with disabilities or in rural or remote communities.

I was so pleased to have connected with the Chalmers development team last week. Developed in 2019 by tech non-profit Ample Labs, Chalmers (www.chalmers.app) is an artificial intelligence-powered chatbot that connects vulnerable individuals to critical services like free meals, shelter, clothing banks, and more, all in real-time on any desktop or mobile device. On November 30th, they will launch the service to the public in York to help tackle the homelessness issue in the York Region. Amidst the critically challenging time, I commend non-for-profit organizations like Ample Labs for stepping up and help the most vulnerable in the community!

As of this morning, businesses can now apply for the new Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy (CERS), which would help cover up to 65% of the rent for businesses who’ve been hard hit by the pandemic. The new Lockdown Support will also provide an additional 25% for those who have been subject to a lockdown under a mandatory public health order. I encourage you to apply for the new Rent Subsidy TODAY!

It was my huge pleasure to have joined Richmond Hill Trade of Board for the Covid-19 Second Wave Business Update this morning. I got a chance to meet many business owners (although virtually), provide the community the newest update on the COVID-19 relief programs, and introduce people to many more other federal resources. I was so happy to see that Canadians have been so united and resilient during the challenging time, and all levels of government have come together to support the small business community. Our message is clear: we’ve got your back, and we will continue to connect the business owners to the resources and key initiatives they need the most.

I recently reconnected with Heather Skoll and her ResetZone team (www.resetzone.ca) to mark #GlobalEntrepreneurshipWeek! After launching in the Spring of 2020, their team has stepped up at this difficult time by offering a tool that could provide much-needed relief during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Reset Zone team is already working hard so that in 2021 they can expand on the wellness tools and offerings available through the app. As a small app with an entrepreneurial back...ground, they seek out working with other small businesses and local practitioners to share all the resources within our community that are accessible for the health of the body and mind. I want to thank Heather and the team for your hard work! Our government will continue to support resilient and innovative entrepreneurs like ResetZone. #GEW2020
