Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of Lincoln Alexander, Canada's first Black MP, Cabinet Minister, and Ontario's Lieutenant Governor. His dedication to fighting racism and building a more equitable Canada is something that continues to inspire us today.
The Covid-19 pandemic has further highlighted inequalities in our community, including the digital divide. The City of Hamilton is working with Regional and Rural Broadhand (R2B2) Project to assess the needs of improved internet connectivity and invite businesses and residents to participate by completing their survey. You can learn more about this survey by visiting the following link: https://engage.hamilton.ca/hamilton-broadband-study
While I am relieved to hear the outbreak at Grace Villa has been declared over, the work does not stop there. We need to better understand how this outbreak that claimed the lives of 44 people got so out of control. I have heard from many front-line workers about the horrible conditions in the home, who were trying their best in the worst of circumstances. Doug Ford promised an "iron ring" around LTC but instead we got a rubber band. https://www.thespec.com//hamiltons-grace-villa-covid-outbr
My office continues to hear from individuals who are concerned about the vaccine roll out plan, especially after the abrupt news that Pfizer has halted it's delivery of promised vaccines. Once again, Ontarians are left with more questions than answers. Its time for MPPs to get back the legislature to work on meaningful solutions that help the people of this province during this on-going crisis!
Ford's Conservatives made it clear: their priority is protecting the executives of long-term care homes. Our priority is protecting residents, families, and workers. Bill 218 should never have passed, we are committed to repealing it.
Today in the house I was pleased to honour Pat Saunders on her 90th birthday. Pat has made a deep and lasting impact in Hamilton over the course of her 60+ years of community service and advocacy. Happy Belated Birthday Pat and thank you for all the work you've done and continue to do! For those who don't know her, here's a Mountain News story on her birthday that touches on her many accomplishments: https://www.hamiltonnews.com//10242172-a-drive-by-90th-bi/

As of Monday, Hamilton will be moving into the "Red Zone" of the province's COVID-19 framework. That means new restrictions on gatherings - here's a full list of what that entails: https://www.ontario.ca//covid-19-response-framework-keepin Spec story: https://www.thespec.com//hamilton-exceeds-400-active-covid
Today we show our gratitude and remember the sacrifices of those who courageously put themselves in harm's way to serve our country. Remembrance Day will look different this year, but smaller ceremonies won't diminish the enormous pride and gratitude we have for our brave veterans and current service members. Lest we forget.
