Well all the hatching is done! In total we had 30 out of 42 eggs hatch. Sadly we had a few little ones that just didn’t quite make it. It happens. We are happy to report that we have 26 happy healthy hungry and very busy chicks! These little ones are all safe with our staff at home for now.

Our chick brooding space is all set up and ready to go! This space will be our chicks home until they are ready to be outside. Hoping for warm spring weather to come quickly!

So many new babies today! It’s hard to keep count of these wiggle chicks but we think we have 22/42 so far! This means that we have already beaten our previous hatch rate of 1/3.

Kids + chores = ? What’s the answer in your experience? Complaining? Here on our farm we love turning chores into something real, something fun, something meaningful so our students learn that responsibility isn’t all bad. In fact our students love the daily chores!!

Now this is joy! Just look at their little faces! 1R is on chicken duty this week! They are working hard to make sure all of the chores get done. Feeding, watering, collecting eggs and raking! There is always lots to do!

Today’s group from 1R was very excited to care for the chickens! Everyone gets to choose a job. Did you know that one of the best ways to encourage and develop a child’s strength and resilience is to give them opportunities to master skills, be generous, be independent and have a place to belong. We feel that our coop gives students a unique opportunity for all of these!

4AL were our chicken coop team this week! They did a amazing job! We just love their goofy spunk and passion for our hens!

Welcome 2L to the learning farm! 2L led by their amazing teacher Ms. Piper will be caring for our hens this week! The kids loved seeing the chickens today and quickly picked their favorites. Today the snuggliest chickens were Mellie and Mrs. Pigeon.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in our coop! 4G had a lot of fun last week taking care of our chickens and making sure they were all dressed up for the Christmas season.

We have the best volunteers! These little cuties spoiled our little hens with veggies this weekend!

Thanks 1L for taking care of the chickens this week! This weekend we will have a team of volunteers taking care of the hens. We do appreciate the volunteers who come to love and care our chickens when the school is closed for breaks and holidays.
