Match Point Tennis 08.09.2020

Warming up for a semi-final this past weekend at the St. George's Open. Cade ended up losing the match 4 & 2 to the eventual winner of the tournament, Evan Mcnicol. Yes, it's great to win big matches, but it's also great to be a sponge in your losses. Soak up all you can to make yourself better when you hit the court again. Thank you Tennis Nova Scotia for putting on a great event!

Little bit of a different vibe today at the Rothesay Tennis Club the day after the NB Open. Still a great place to grind and get better. #targetpractice #firsttouches #serve #tennisserve #getbettereveryday

Coach Cade with one of his young red ball students taking in some of the action at the $5,000 NB Open at the Rothesay Tennis Club this weekend. Coach Cade played in the event. He ended up losing in the quarterfinals in singles to the eventual winner. In doubles, he and his partner lost in the semi finals. It was a great weekend of tennis and one of our favourite tournaments. Tennis New Brunswick Tennis Canada IONIK VĂȘtements Sport

We had a soggy day on the courts, so Coach Cade decided to show our kids how the serve motion should feel by throwing racquets on the field. Thank you Venus Williams and Serena Williams for sharing this drill. #tennisserve #tennisplayer #tenniscoach #continentalgrip

We had great day of tennis yesterday! Started off with our young red ball group. Who doesn't love a little clean the room to work on that throwing/serve motion?!?!... After that we took to the court with our older red ball group, who enjoyed a Battle Royale in Team Cones. And finally we capped the day off with our first Tennis New Brunswick team tennis league match at Rothesay Tennis Club It was a great day to see all the kids at the court "playing" tennis! #tennisplayer #tennis #teamtennis #tenniscoach #tenniscanada

In this tennis volley session, Cade and I will show you a 30-minute volley session you can practice 2 to 3 times a week, guaranteed to improve your volleys. The volley is the easiest shot in tennis to learn as its so simple yet so many players struggle to get it right as they do too much with the racket. Here are 5 drills to perfect your net game:... Drill #1 Volley to volley crosscourt from the service line. Players should try to do 20 to 30 in a row without any half volleys before they move to the other side. Progression is to do volley to volley while moving across the service line. Drill #2 Volleys from the middle of the service box. The player should try to get 10 to 30 volleys landing in zone 4 (between 3/4 court and the baseline). This drill will help the player understand what it feels like to exaggerate the hitting zone on their volleys to keep them deep. Drill #3 Volley to overhead crosscourt. Trying to get a total of 10 volleys and overheads moving through the baseline on each side. Drill #4 Volleys closing down the net. This is a great drill to work on closing down the net after you hit a volley from the service line. Lay some targets down and see how accurate you are. Drill #5 Half volley with two volleys closing the net. This drill replicates what it might be like to attack the net after a serve and you have to pick up a half volley from 3/4 court and you want to continue to come to the net.

Well done Tennis New Brunswick! This was a great first event and very well managed, especially with the obstacles we are facing due to COVID-19.

It's been awhile since our last post. But we are back! Over the last few weeks we have been shaking the rust off, like most of you. I have a lot more rust compared to Cade... actually my rust may never shake off. We wanted to share with you a drill that works on a simple tactic and should help you win more matches.... In the video, you can watch Cade perform a drill that focuses on hitting forehands from the middle of the court. While Cade is hitting forehands from the middle of the court, he is trying to keep the ball from landing in the middle of the court on his opponent's side. We do four sets of 12 to 15 balls. Each time Cade hits the ball in the middle of the court or hits a ball into the net, he needs to do one tuck jump. By practicing this drill it will teach you how to hit more forehands in your matches and hopefully win more points. Have a watch and let us know what you think.

With so much uncertainty going on today, this might be the best way to find competitive matches in your local area. It might be even worth it for tournament organizers to create UTR events to create bigger draws when you can only gather people from your local area.

We found a court! It was extremely windy, but it was nice to get out and shake some of the rust off. Tennis New Brunswick #tennis #backatit #safeplay #tenniscanada

Looks very doable. What else would you add? Right now in New Brunswick we can play with family and "bubble" family members. The only issue is we have no courts open yet. Hopefully soon. Stay safe and healthy!

Garage Tennis Training Part 4 Back Outdoors With Volleys Off The Garage Door Volley Challenge! Garage Tennis Training Part 3 Moved Outdoors To Tennis Wall Training One of the most underutilized ways to practice tennis is hitting off the wall. This is our first time trying this and it was awesome. We even used a piece of tape on the wall to show where the net would be measured (3ft high) and we measured 39ft back to mark a baseline. In this video, you can watch Cade perform a few groundstroke drills that you can easily replicate. These drills will improve your footw...ork, reflexes, consistency and, timing. Many top professional players learned the fundamental elements of their tennis games on the wall. Drill one: Forehands only - This drill will help you groove your forehand on the spot and improve your accuracy with the target zone on the wall being a small zone. Focus on early racket preparation and getting behind the ball. Drill two: Backhands only - This drill will help you groove your backhand and improve your accuracy on the backhand groundstroke. Drill three: Alternate FH & BH - This is a great drill for you to work on spacing as balls are hit down the middle towards you. Drill four: Serve & Play Point - You can also practice serves against the wall and the best way to do this is serve down the "T" and play the point out from there. The return will come back extremely fast so you need to get ready for your first groundstroke really quick. From there you play the point out. Drill five: Overheads - This was very challenging, but that is what we want. The degree of difficulty is high and if you can master the overhead on the wall, you can master it on court. At the end of video, Cade's old man, that's me, gives the wall a try and he seems to really enjoy watching and imitating me. :-) Hitting against the wall was an eye-opener for us and it's something we plan to do much more of during this time of uncertainty.

Not sure there was much training going on, but we did have fun. Break out the mini nets and play with us. 1.Touch Tennis: Play games to 7, in a small area.... 2. Skin Volley: Work on your volleys while trying to hit your opponent. Highly recommend using red or orange balls. 3. Edgies: Count how many times you can hit the ball off the frame of your racquet (up and down) 4. Dance moves optional. #tennis #tennisfamily #quarantinelife #minitennis

This is heartbreaking for Cade and all the young players who train and work so hard to qualify for Nationals. Our family, however, is 100% in favour of this decision though. Let's all do our part to stay strong & healthy! http://www.tenniscanada.com//tennis-canada-cancels-all-n/

Match Point Tennis 28.08.2019

Here are three 2 on 1 tennis drills we have done this indoor season during Cades training blocks while building up for Atlantics and Nationals. We usually do one of these sessions a week leading up to an event. We taper it off a week or two before the event, where Cade will then train more point play sessions and work on his patterns. Because there are two players on one side during the 2 on 1 session, the player on their own has to work much, much harder than if they were ...hitting against one player only. Give them a try this summer and see if you can beat our record.

Here are six research based reasons for multi-sport participation: Better Overall Skills and Ability: Research shows that early participation in multiple sports leads to better overall motor and athletic development, longer playing careers, increased ability to transfer sports skills other sports and increased motivation, ownership of the sports experience, and confidence. Smarter, More Creative Players: Multi-sport participation at the youngest ages yields better decision ma...king and pattern recognition, as well as increased creativity. These are all qualities that coaches of high level teams look for. Most College Athletes Come From a Multi-Sport Background: A 2013 American Medical Society for Sports Medicine survey found that 88% of college athletes surveyed participated in more than one sport as a child 10,000 Hours is not a Rule: In his survey of the scientific literature regarding sport specific practice in The Sports Gene, author David Epstein finds that most elite competitors require far less than 10,000 hours of deliberate practice. Specifically, studies have shown that basketball (4000), field hockey (4000) and wrestling (6000) all require far less than 10,000 hours. Even Anders Ericsson, the researcher credited with discovering the 10,000 hour rule, says the misrepresentation of his work, popularized by Malcolm Gladwell in Outliers, ignores many of the elements that go into high-performance (genetics, coaching, opportunity, luck) and focuses on only one, deliberate practice. That, he says, is wrong. Free Play Equals More Play: Early specialization ignores the importance of deliberate play/free play. Researches found that activities which are intrinsically motivating, maximize fun and provide enjoyment are incredibly important. These are termed deliberate play (as opposed to deliberate practice, which are activities motivated by the goal of performance enhancement and not enjoyment). Deliberate play increases motor skills, emotional ability, and creativity. Children allowed deliberate play also tend spend more time engaged in a sport than athletes in structured training with a coach. There are Many Paths to Mastery: A 2003 study on professional ice hockey players found that while most pros had spent 10,000 hours or more involved in sports prior to age 20, only 3000 of those hours were involved in hockey specific deliberate practice (and only 450 of those hours were prior to age 12).
