Preparing kutia, the quintessential Ukrainian Christmas Eve dish, is no easy task. Essential to this sweet cereal dish is finely ground poppy seed. Kutia can b...e a time-consuming dish, especially if you're using a makitra and makohin (similar to a mortar and pestle) to grind or pound your poppy seed by hand. While the root for both words is mak (the Ukrainian word for 'poppy'), these objects can be used for so much more. A makitra is a large earthenware mixing bowl used for seeds, mixing dough, sometimes for storing flour, and even warming up milk for making cheese. Makohin is the wooden club-shaped utensil used in a makitra to grind or pound ingredients like poppy seeds, millet, and salt. Oseredok's permanent collection is rich in examples of this customary tool. During this holiday season, while many are looking back at family recipes to make sure their celebrations feel just right, we are reminded of the Christmas memories that each makitra carries. The cracks and fibres of the makitry in our collection hold unique and special family recipes of their previous keepers. Some of these pieces were brought from Ukraine (one from the village of Pomirsti in Buchach district of the Ternopil Region, from 1903) and others were made in Canada. See more

CALL TO UKRAINIAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND SADOCHOK TEACHERS Due to the uncontrolled outbreaks of COVID19 in Alberta we have decided to redesign the upcoming SING...-A-LONG Adventures Exhibit at ACUA Alberta Council for the Ukrainian Arts into a Virtual Children's Celebration. Together with ACUA and our very own Зачарована Ялинка - Enchanted Christmas Tree, during the first week of December I will launch an online series of bilingual sing-a-long sessions based on the KAZKA children's books. Plus there's a new colouring/activity book that has already gone to press. As you all know, switching last minute to an online format is not easy. So, I'm putting a call out to teachers, asking if they will be willing to share some of the class resources that they have developed over the years based on the Kazka sing-a-long stories. If you have any videos, craft ideas, or handouts (like colouring sheets, bilingual crossword puzzles, wordfind, etc.) that we can share on-line for the months of December and January, please contact me - Messenger or email [email protected] To refresh your memories the stories are: The Mosquito's Wedding - Ой що ж то за шум Snow Folks - Снгова псня The Enchanted Christmas Tree - Зачарована ялинка Spring Serenade - Веснвка Sing-a-long Treasures - Спвуч скарби
