Oystershell scale is a major problem in cotoneaster hedge in Calgary. It can be control if the diagnosis is done at early stage and spraying of the chemical immediately after eggs are hatched to crawler. However, if the infestation is really severe, it is better to mow the hedge back to about 6- 8 above ground before bud break (either in fall or in winter or early spring). In June when crawlers start feeding, spray the sprouting stumps. A new hedge will grow back within a few years as long as the roots are healthy. Slow release granular fertilizers can be applied to enhance the growth of the hedge. Call the arborist if your hedge is infested with scale, this is the best time to rejuvenate.

Are you panic due to evergreen needle drop? Older and inside needles of the evergreen turn yellow, brown, and drop this time of the year. I am getting several panic calls every day. This is a normal process called ‘season needle drop’. Evergreen sheds the older needles and grow new needles continuously. The extent of needle drops varies on the tree to tree and year to year. Generally, the needles remain in the tree 3-5 years and drop. This process is also triggered by a sudd...en change in temperature or a drop in night temperature. Regular watering and deep root fertilization with nitrogen fertilizer in the spring helps the tree to recover fast. If the younger needles of your evergreen are turning yellow or brown early in the season, that indicates there is something wrong in the tree. It can be due to insects, disease, or improper growing conditions.
