Mrs Burt's Essentials 06.07.2021

It's not too early to start thinking about Christmas presents. With Fall upon us and Winter fast approaching, many people think their skin is dry and itchy due to the falling temperatures. If you have dry itchy skin, I can help! Falling temperatures is not the cause of your discomfort. The cause is directly related to the products you use to wash your skin. "Moisturizing Bars & Beauty Bars" are not actually SOAP. They are harsh detergents and they are also full of synthe...tic surfactants (bubble agents). Skin Therapy Begins with Real Soap! Winter, Summer, Spring or Fall! I also make Face Coverings. Masks are not only meant to protect you and those around you from the virus, they can also be a fashion statement. But don't let your choice to be fashionable reduce your protection. Mine are made by me. I make them to order because I want you to feel comfortable wearing them. Whether you buy from me or someone else. Don't just buy local, buy locally made. Your support of local small businesses may help your neighbors remain in their homes.

They fit us so well. I am going to show them to my Mom and family and we will be ordering more shortly" LA Don't just order! Buy proudly Canadian made in Durham! Made to order reusable/washable Face Covers. Environmentally friendly too! Each has a removable nose wire (necessary to avoid fog on your glasses), a pocket for an optional filter, and they cinch in on the adjustable sides to create a snug fit. I make sizes 4yrs and up. I studied Fashion Design and ended up designing my own pattern because I wanted a snug fit under the chin which none of the existing patterns had. I'm also continuing to offer my handmade soap. Skin therapy begins with REAL soap! No synthetics, no Fragrances! Only Essential Oils. All my products are made with food grade ingredients. Lots of varieties to chose from! Do you need an eco friendly washable Face Cover? (Mine are also reversiable too!) I can help! Tired of skin drying synthetic detergents disguised as Body Wash or Moisturizing Bar? I can help with that too! And if you like to save $$ I can even help with that! Example: Buy a bar of my Face and Body Soap, a Bar of Shampoo and a Face Cover. With FREE local delivery all for just $20. But you can create your own custom comb of my products! This is a picture of my friend Nic...o being silly. But it shows the design and fit of my Face Covers. Nico recently lost his Dad to the virus so he knows first hand how important Fave Covers are. I’ve been staying busy since I was for to close my shop (booth 2412, Aisle L at the Pickering Markets) by sewing for Frontline Healthcare workers. I make and sell a few Face Covers to help pay for supplies and sewing machine repairs. I charge $8 each which includes FREE Delivery (Ajax/Pickering). I sew in sizes for adults and children (4 years and up) Each of my Face Covers includes: a removable nose wire (which goes across the bridge of your nose, to prevent fog on glasses caused by gaps) and a pocket for your (optional) filter. I rounded my pattern to snugly fit under the chin. And I make the bias tape ties (under his hat) by hand, which cinches in at the ear to eliminate any gaps (creating that snug fit). Since gaps reduce protection. To place your order simply send me a pm including the number/gender of Face Covers you require along with your delivery address. Once I have your Face Covers made I will contact you so you know when to expect delivery. I do offer child sizing as well. Please tell me the age/gender of children. And something about them: favorite color etc. I can’t promise fabric designs/colors. However, I will do my best to make something they will want to wear.

My latest Shampoo Bar! It will be ready by the time the social distancing is lifted! Social distancing is not new to me. We practiced as much as possible, when Lee Anne (my friend who died of Ovarian Cancer) was sick. We had always washed hands when entering each other’s homes. I pray the world will see once people go back to normal daily life, how important washing hands really is! I’m doing my part and keeping my distance from others. It’s a full time job keeping a teena...ger busy while confined to the house. The unreliable internet is not helping. We’ve decided to begin work on making reusable surgical masks (they will have a pocket to insert filters) Thank you to Andrea Leibrock for her generous donation towards this project. I asked for scraps but instead received a box of beautiful fabric (which will make a difference to those on the frontlines). If you are still working and need Soap-To-Go, send me a private message (best to use my name: Hilary Sutherland). I will do my best to get my single use Soap Beads to you. Remember all handmade soap is antibacterial by nature. Please never use homemade hand sanitizers. They can not protect you! I do my best to comply and follow the rules set by Health Canada. Unfortunately, some makers are putting money first.

Yeah! I was busy trying to thaw the van enough to get a door (any door) open so I could get to the market! Ended up driving with the interior lights on. Loosened one door enough to trip the sensor but not enough to actually open the door! Then had to leave the doors unlocked because I was afraid I’d not get back in. Driving home with all the interior lights on didn’t feel so good Why did it take so long to get the sending message?

For anyone who received my Shampoo as a Christmas Gift. Here are the instructions and if you continue to read you will discover all the things my Soaps (for Face, Body, Hair and Laundry) do not include. My Shampoo Bar is a simple Soap Recipe that I developed myself (after years of research and a ton of input from Makers around the world) specifically for hair. All my Soaps (which includes the Shampoo and Laundry Fluff/Soap) do not contain anything that you can't eat! or pro...nounce! To use it is simple: Wet your hair and be sure to completely wet all the layers to the scalp. You can either rub the bar over your hair or lather in your hands and use the lather to wash your hair. To increase lather, you need added friction. Either drop the bar of Shampoo into an Orange/Onion bag (or one of those puffy things from the dollar store). And proceed with the lathering process. Once you finish scrubbing your scalp move on to the length of hair (if you have extra). Rinse with water. Rinse with Vinegar, I use approximately 700ml (I prefer cold) water with a couple of cap fulls of White Vinegar. How much Vinegar will depend on your water, harder water may require more. Makers from around the world suggest using Apple Cider Vinegar. However, I have always found success with the cheaper White Vinegar (and it's in my bathroom anyway). Proceed with the rest of your shower, when that's finished, give your hair a final rinse with water. The smell of vinegar will not linger on your hair. So you see the entire process is no more involved than using regular liquid Shampoos and Conditioners. The difference lies in the ingredients and packaging. There are no plastic bottles when you buy my Shampoo Bars. But there are also no synthetics either.

https://www.hebebotanicals.co.nz/sodium-coco-sulfate-anoth/ https://www.zeroxeno.com//sodium-lauryl-sulfate-vs-sodium- Both sodium coco sulfate and SLS are synthetic detergents and should never be part of any natural cleanser. Natural products that are kind to your skin, and environmentally friendly, will not contain lauryl sulfate, laureth sulfate, coco sulfate or any of the long list of other synthetic detergents.... Sodium Coco Sulfate another synthetic detergent Because we make natural soaps we are sometimes asked about synthetic detergents, and recently in particular about sodium coco sulphate. Before describing sodium coco sulfate I will talk a bit about sodium lauryl sulfate as the two are closely related. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is a synthetic detergent used in a wide range of commercial personal care products. These products include shampoos, shower gels, pump dispenser liquid 'soaps', and most toothpastes. Unfortunately many so-called 'natural' products contain SLS. SLS belongs to a class of medium to strong surfactants (or 'surface active agents') known as the alkyl sulfates. As a group these chemicals have a market advantage of strong cleansing power, high foam production (which people equate with better cleansing - though foaming and cleansing are two quite different things) and very low production cost. Unfortunately they are also skin irritants, in part because they remove protective oils from the skin. In fact sodium lauryl sulfate is something of a gold standard for producing irritation in skin irritation studies. Because of the concerns about SLS, and increasing consumer resistance, companies often like to hide the fact that they are using SLS in their products by using alternative names - there are now over 100 chemical and trade names for SLS! The more common chemical names include; olefin sulfate, sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), dodecyl sodium sulfate; lauryl sodium sulfate, lauryl sulfate sodium salt, sodium n-dodecyl sulfate, sulfuric acid monododecyl ester sodium salt, and sodium dodecane sulfate. SLS can be made either from petroleum oil (via the OXO process) or from coconut or palm oils (via the Ziegler process). Both processes involve a complex sequence of chemical reactions for attaching a sulfate group to a long carbon chain molecule (see Figure 1). With coconut oil as the starting material the coconut fatty acids are converted to fatty alcohols and these alcohols are then sulfonated with sufur trioxide or chlorosulfonic acid. Companies sometimes promote their pseudo-natural cosmetics with the explanation that the SLS they use is derived from coconut or palm oil (plant-derived), as if this somehow makes it more natural. But SLS is not natural, it is a synthetic chemical that is not found in nature.

I have a friend in New Hampshire, Doreen, she thought it would be nice to send me a care package of items she made using her 3D printer. Thank you Doreen I was so excited to receive my gifts that I signed up for the email messages that would keep me updated on the progress of my package. I fondly remember our bi-weekly visits from the UPS guy when I worked in Portland, ME. My co-workers and I would race to the door anxiously awaiting his arrival. (I was single at the time) M...y package first went to Nashua NH, and from there it went to Jamaica, NY (in Queens). When it boarded a plane at JFK apparently it missed a sorting machine! My little package is now in France! I can’t wait to see all the postmarks. Canada Post is awful but, New Hampshire is not that far! The good news is my package is headed ? Well I don’t yet know so I don’t want to guess. But my name is Scotch? Hope they have better sorting machines in France

If you need a Mask Cover I can help. When I first heard my Soaper Friends from around the world were sewing Masks/Mask Covers (over a month ago now) I told them all it was a very bad idea. I studied Fashion Design in College, disliked it so much that I turned down an internship with a well known Canadian Designer. I also spent time working in the Health Records departments of various hospitals. My science from University is the same as the RNs, I dealt with paper and comp...uters instead of sick people. But I also spent too much time behind a mask with various family members over the years. My training in both areas told me a fabric mask was not going to save lives. I felt they would only serve to give people a false sense of security. Then I was asked to join the growing network of people, to make them. The supplies in every country are falling short of the demand, and people are growing desperate to extend the life of what has become the new world currency. Governments are hijacking truck loads of the protective equipment. The world is at war to secure the masks, gloves and gowns etc necessary to save lives. I want to be very clear: I do NOT make Masks! I make Mask Covers! there is a very big difference. Nothing I make will ever come close to a replacement for the Protective Equipment necessary to keep those who need them safe. However, Mask Covers are sometimes used to prolong the life of the masks worn by those who really require them in order to work around the people suffering from the current Covid-19 Virus that has spread around the globe. Since the Center for Disease Control now recommends everyone going outside their homes wear a mask, I want to use both my skills and knowledge to help. If you want a Mask Cover (filters can be added in the pocket), I can help. Send me a private message. I am asking for a minimal donation to help pay for repairs needed to my sewing machine. https://www.forbes.com//cdc-will-recommend-wearing-a-clo/

This might be amusing to watch but it’s actually very seriously the truth! Enlight of the current world pandemic hand washing is something I hope people will learn from! Beyond the current outbreak! Please share this with everyone you know! I make real soap! Not detergent! Liquid Soaps are 80% water! And come in plastic bottles! (Neither are environmentally friendly) I have resisted making them (in spite of repeated requests) because I never believed convenience should out w...eigh science! I also make Soap to Go/Soap Beads, perfect for: Diaper Bags, Backpacks, Glovebox, Guest Room, Powder Room or your pocket! My Samples (if you’ve had them) are meant as single use Soap! (I’ve had many customers tell me they love the convenience they provide). Send me a private message to get yours! https://youtu.be/rnI0PHIFEMA
