Asian History Month Profile: Sim Bhullar Courtesy of BBC: Born in Toronto, Ontario, Sim Bhullar was the first player of Indian descent to make it to the NBA when he joined the 2014 Sacramento Kings Summer League team. By the end of the summer league, he would break barriers again by becoming the first South Asian player to sign an NBA contract. Sim Bhullar would only play three minutes for the Sacramento Kings before moving on to play for the Canadian National Team at the Pan... Am Games. More recently, the Toronto Raptors would sign him on to their developmental D League team, the 905 Raptors. "Hopefully, more kids growing up will see there's a player of Indian descent on the court and we can get a couple more Indian NBA players." Asian Heritage Month: Larry Kwong Courtesy of Color of Hockey: Born in Vernon, British Columbia, Larry Kwong was the NHL’s first player of color, and the first player of Asian descent when he played for the New York Rangers. In March 1948, Kwong would get his first chance to prove himself in the NHL. All the hard work seemed to have paid off. However, the first two periods would go by and Larry Kwong wouldn’t get the chance to step on the ice. By the end of the game, he ...had played exactly one NHL shift before being sent back down to the minors the next day. Although Larry Kwong never got to fully prove himself in the NHL, he was a big inspiration for future minority athletes. Society may not have been ready for him given that he was given only that one minute, but he opened the door and moved society forward. Kwong sadly passed away in March 2018, but his legacy lives on through the Larry Kwong Appreciation Society, where they hope to get Larry inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame and the BC Hockey Hall of Fame.
