Ms. Lecompte's Virtual Art Room 21.02.2021

Good morning SES! For this coming week, (week 8 of the Ministry’s package) The Grade 3 Art project suggested, is to work in mixed media. The children will be asked to find objects from their home and to produce a collage. Collages are really neat because you can choose the medium of your choice and add to it. I sometimes like to use shells, feathers and other materials that are special to me and incorporate them onto a drawing or painting or even wallpaper background. The wor...d Collage in this sense, refers to the fact that you will need to glue your different objects onto your support paper with glue. You can also use gel medium if you happen to have a jar. Many artists over the years have experimented with collage. Henri Matisse a French Fauvist and Post -Impressionist painter often worked with paper collages to produce his many lyrical masterpieces. Robert Rauchenburg, an American Pop Artist, and painter experimented with many different materials to produce his famous combine paintings. Collages can take on many different forms depending on how the different pieces are assembled together. When you have the different materials close by, that’s when the fun begins. You can pick and choose, move objects around before coming up with your final composition. I’ve added two of my collages done in the past for you to see. One is based on a photo of My Great-Great Grandmother taken from the late 1890s about. Her photo is glued onto a wallpaper support and I added smooth rocks and feathers, which speaks to her native heritage. The other example is done from back in the days when I was living in Montreal on Rose de Lima in Saint Henri as a young artist. I called this collage 5a.m. le petit déjeuner. Unfortunately, my cat Soka liked to catch birds and I would sometimes discover their feathers spread about. I invite you to explore and experiment with mixed media and post your collages for the upcoming week. Parents and students can all participate

Here's a little background information about Albert Giacometti. He was a very important Swiss artist who worked in Paris during the first half of the 20th century. He was influenced by Cubism and Surrealism. For those who are wondering about what Surrealism entails, just think about the word Surrealism. The artist goes beyond realism in depicting or producing his/her Art. Giacometti was influenced by the human condition. His work is often existential in nature. If you would l...ike to have a simple explanation of his Art, you can also go onto Wikipedia to get a more complete understanding of his philosophy. I basically took a screen shot of two of his pictures from a Google search. Remember boys and girls, for this week's Grade 4 Art project that is based on Giacometti's Elongated figures, please post or send me your completed projects. Try to think of my virtual Art room as a way to let other school mates view your Art works. It's like a Virtual Art Show. Your weekly Art assignments that are sent home are excellent and the Ministry of Education is doing a fine job in motivating all of you budding Art students. You can have a look at my first live video to see how these aluminium paper sculptures are made. I'll try to add more live videos and eventually will get over my stage fright. Have a great day and enjoy the beautiful sunshine.

The Grades 3 and 4s this past week were asked to experiment with Tape Art. We may refer to this type of Art as Geometric Abstraction, since they are working with rectangles, lines and colour. Most of you, have heard of Picasso’s Analytical Cubism. Piet Mondrian was influenced by this Art movement. However, he went even further and developed his own radical Art style and went completely Abstract which is referred to as Neo Plasticism or De Stile. (H.J. Janson, History of Ar...t.) He worked with verticals, horizontal and primary colours in coloured rectangles. His work became totally abstract with no recognition of figures. We can refer to his works as abstract collages. ( p729 Janson, history of Art) I thought I should mention this Dutch Artist because our Tape Art project reminds me of his work from the early 20th century. I’ve included one of his works along with Ryan Cooke’s Art work from 4M. Feel free students to also display your project in this post. Art is meant to be seen and shared. Have a great week-end!
