Speaking from experience, as a multi species angler, a lot of the time we fish in shallower waters in spring and early summer with deep weed coverage. The trolling motor works great whipping through the weeds but sometimes the propeller gets fouled, so when your running and gunning, you throw the trolling motor ba...ck into the transportation position and don’t think about cleaning off all the weeds that may have got lodged. Those without a second console know, that those weeds are going to find you and slap you in the face sooner than later taking off down the lake with your outboard. Truthfully I know a lot of people who think or have kids whether you admit it or not, see it as overwhelming bringing them on the boat. Well it’s just easier or they won’t have fun if the fish aren’t biting And if I said it’s not-I’d be lying. Yes you will fish less..But the thing is, you just have to have a different outlook and take the selfishness out of you and tell yourself today is for them before you even leave for the water, it truly helps your mindset. This day... is something for your child/ren to remember. Kids are so impressionable. Exposing them to the outdoors provides them with a life not everyone gets to experience. Yes there are times, my guy won’t want to fish at all, maybe it’s 20 minutes, sometimes it’s longer, other times all he wants to do is sort through our tackle boxes, play in the live well or be our net boy & even just cheers us on! But it’s how you handle your day which creates the (+) experience for them. BE PREPARED/PATIENT (bring extra clothes, my guy likes to somehow always find a way to get soaked) & dress them accordingly to the weather. Bring LOTS OF SNACKS/FLUIDS (kids get bored sometimes and all they want to do is eat, but if you run out of food, it creates the monster in the child to come out) BACK UP PLAN-bring colouring books or small toys,games or an iPad that they love( we sometimes let him watch a movie in the relaxing elements. It can be a long day & sometimes they need that break. BE FUN- yes the fish you may have just caught may not be big to you or even fun- but involve them! Make it a big deal of a catch and get enthusiastic, it boosts their interest & they become proud of their catch and more importantly themselves. TAKE PICTURES OF THEM. ASK them what we should use for bait & try it! STAY ORGANIZED- yes this is the time to take that extra time & make sure you have all their stuff organized together so it’s not time to play lost & found when you pack up/need something. 5 years in, I’m finally getting it At the end of the day, I look forward to hearing for months later Mommy, Remember that time I caught a perch and our fishes kissed each other?
