A new study has identified a molecule which, if blocked, can delay progression of MS. Researchers at the University of Montreal Hospital Research Centre identif...ied a molecule called, ALCAM, which when blocked reduces the migration of B cells into the brain and delays progression providing a new therapeutic avenue for treatment of MS. By blocking ALCAM, researchers reduced the flow of B cells into the brain in mice and slowed progression of the disease. ALCAM is present at higher levels in B cells of people with multiple sclerosis. B cells and their migration into the brain are thought to contribute to the progressive phase of the disease.
