If youre having a ant problem in your house, you might want to check around the perimeter of your house to see if any of the wood is rotten. Ants are attracted to damp wood its great places for them to build their homes. Even if you have vinyl siding water could of penetrated into the wood through the house wrap as seen in these photos.
Its nice to have a client comment on your work how lovely it looks and how it will out last the house. See old and new
Is it better to get a quote to get work done or pay by the hr??? Well there are pros and cons to both. For example a supplier might quote 4 hrs labour to replace a window or a door. What happens when they run in to rot or other problems not expected and the guys doing the work only have a certain time frame to get it done . Do they install the door or window and not fix the other issues ?? Paying by the hr risks the chance of hrs being stretched out . Well the best advice is ...to get a repeatable builder someone you trust to tell you what needs to be done and not just cover over the problem. At MSN carpentry thats what we strive to do , doing to job safe, secure and long lasting . We also like to educate the homeowner on the work and how it should be done. I seen so much sloppy work done it makes me upset that people are being ripped off. A painter painting over obvious rotten wood , doors and windows being installed in a new build with no flashing, doors and windows being retrofitted with not enough caulking around it or and flashing around the top . Its very sad for the home owner. Cheapest isnt always the best. See more
On a 17 yr old house that should of been built to Nova Scotia building code standards this is what condition the floor was in when taking out the door frame ( see photo) There was no flashing, wrap around typar, no vapour barrier, no tar paper and this was the original build . There was even holes in the house wrap . The worst thing I seen for safety is the 10 x 10 deck on the second level was nailed to the side of the house using 10 inch spikes, the deck is actually sinking in the one corner. Disgraceful that contractors do this and get away with it. But MSN Carpentry is committed to doing it right, it might take more time but you will have a worry free job when its completed . How many people are getting a sloppy job and only realizing it yrs later when things start to fall apart???? Very Sad
Hi friends I was just doing another renovation and a found another electrical no-no. As seen in the photo the wires for this light is running right through the knock out dangerous . The wires can chafe up against the box and cause shorts or even worst a fire. A device called a box connector needs to be installed in the hole to secure the wire so there is no chance for shorts . Hire a qualified person who knows how to do the work your life might depend on it.
This is not the proper way to install a wall light fixture , but thats how some contractors rush to cut corners . When buying a new house everything might seem beautiful but its what what you dont see thats worrisome. As seen in this photo there is no electrical box to fasten the light to, the electrician just smashed holes in the drywall to get the wire out through the wall This is not doing it right!!!
MSN Home Improvement is well into its retrofitting our trailer for our mobile work shop. We will be able to service our customers in Lunenburg Co with not just general Carpentry but also lawn and garden care, tree trimming and chipping of brush .
One of the steps to having a lush green lawn in to aerating it as seen in the photo and the video. Aerating helps to promote root grown, water and fertilizer penetration. A healthy lawn keeps weeds and bugs at bay. MSN Carpentry also does lawn maintenance.

Another successful job laying a sub-floor. Glued and screwed down to the original floor.
There maybe anxiety when hiring a trades person to do work at your house due to the hourly rate cost. Contractors or trades people have expenses such as tools, wear and tear on equipment. Liability insurance, transportation costs, WCB costs, legal and accounting costs, administrative costs and so on. All that has to be factored into the hourly rate that is charged to the customer in some way , or it would be pointless to be in the business.
Got some new equipment this week to assist in some new jobs coming up . One of those jobs is outside of Bridgewater laying a subfloor level to the existing floor . If you dont have the right tools for the job it effects the quality of the work as well as customer satisfaction. You cant beat Dewalt quality.
Happy New Years from MSN Carpentry.
MSN Carpentry tip of the week Fact - Ceramic tiles water proof a shower ?? FALSE, moisture still penetrates through the grout and will destroy the substrate if not properly water proofed . Watch YouTube videos how Schluter products completely water proofs moisture prone areas. https://www.schluter.ca/schluter-ca/en_CA/
