FRIDAY THE 13TH. On October 13th, 1307, French king Philip IV the Fair ordered the mass arrest of Knights Templar in the Kingdom of France. That day fell on Friday 13th and some consider that the superstition about Friday 13th being an unlucky day stems from this very event. Jacques de Molay was the last Templar Grandmaster who was put to death by burning at the stake on March 18, 1314. His martyrdom against the forces of tyranny become a powerful symbol that many fraternal ...societies such as the Freemasons referenced in their ceremonies and literature. His final words were recorded as "SPES MEA IN DEO EST, which translates as My Hope Is In God, which was later adopted as a motto of the Scottish Rite. Brethren, a reminder that on November 7th at 3:00 PM via Zoom, Mount Hermon and the Vancouver Lodge of Education & Research are co-hosting a panel discussion with author of Conspiracies of Conspiracies: How delusions have overrun America, Dr. Thomas Milan Konda and R.W. Bro. Trevor McKeown, moderated by R.W. Bro Wes Regan. As some may have heard, there have been QAnon and other conspiracy theory 'enthusiasts' protesting in front of the Grand Secretary's office here in Burnaby... making this a timely discussion. Given the surge in conspiracism seen during the pandemic the panel discussion will help Freemasons familiarize themselves with some of the foundational works that underpin today's conspiratorial delusions and question the ways in which what we are seeing today is similar and different from past instances like the rise of the Anti-Masonic Party in the U.S., or the "Satanic Panic" of the 1980s and other punctuated moments where Freemasonry was targeted by reactionary and anti-intellectual forces.
