Our small home flocks of chickens and ducks are going to live in our tomato hoophouse for awhile. It's a bit cozier than their outdoor coops. We planted a cover crop of tillage radish and oats and peas there this fall, so they'll have some greenery to enjoy. Plus we're hoping they'll eat some of the weed seeds in the soil, and maybe some overwintering bug life? And to top it all off, they'll be fertilizing the soil for us. We've never done it before so we'll see how it goes, but it seems like a nice symbiotic relationship for all.

Happy solstice, and merry wishes to all over the upcoming holidays. I always get a sense of peace knowing the light is beginning to return to the earth, even as we enter the coldest time of the year. Wishing you all a bit of peace, and joy too wherever you may find it.

Finally got the hay on the garlic (even despite the snow, which has since been replaced with rain). Our greens which very lovingly lasted us until December (solely under row cover) are done now and we've sold through most of our storage crops. We are closing our little farm store for the winter, as well as our online farm stand. Hope the snow comes back to stay because there's nothing like waking up in the morning after a long spring/summer/fall of farming and thinking, "Well, can't do any field work today." Thanks, winter!

We planted the garlic. Twelve 50ft beds. 7200 cloves. We dug holes, we pushed each clove underneath the ground, we raked over the dirt. We planted the garlic, and we planted our hopes for next year, all the while putting to rest our hopes for this one. With each clove planted, we said goodbye to the worries of our season, the waiting and the wondering, all the potential of every crop that we held in our minds, we put that weight to rest. Nothing more to plant, nothing more ...to weed, nothing more to save. We looked around our field, cold and wet with mud, sporting the tall stalks of this summer's weeds, gone to seed, the milk thistles and fleabane and tumbleweed grasses, remnants of the frost-bitten parsley, the overgrown pathways, the landscape fabric still holding the roots of summer's cucumbers. Let it go, the garlic whispered. Yet we knew it would be the same garlic that would wake us in the spring, its green fingers rising up from the ground, beckoning us to begin again. With each clove planted, we committed to next season, to the first sprouts of spring, the scapes in June, the harvest in July, racks of drying garlic and the cutting of stems and the dry wrappings scattered everywhere. With each clove planted, we began to dream. Of beautiful rows of lettuces, purple and green. Peppers, growing tall, cucumbers and zucchinis bursting with fruit. Hoophouses full of ripe tomatoes. Thick rows of spinach, hearty beet leaves and beautiful round radishes poking out from the soil. Kale and chard, leeks and spring onions, cabbages and carrots and broccoli and eggplant and squash and on- a field of abundance and beauty. We saw perfect rows, free from weeds, mowed pathways, tools hung on racks. We saw the blue skies of August and heard the cicadas and felt sticky watermelon juice on our chins. With each clove planted, we moved further away from the truth of this season and closer to the fantasy of the next. When we finished - our minds and bodies tired and cold, our boots layers of mud - we made our peace with this season of growing, and began the season of dreaming.

Thank you to everyone who visited our booths at Strathroy and Komoka Markets this season! Getting to sell our vegetables directly to our community is a huge part of why we do what we do. We want to help create a vibrant local food system where consumer choices matter, and the journey of food from farm to plate is transparent and open to all. By shortening that supply chain line, you get to know what goes into the food you're eating, who grows it, and what your money is supp...orting. In our case, you know your food is being grown without chemicals and with care for the soil and ecology. You know it's being grown by us and our local crew. And you know you're supporting our family and local employees, our stewardship of the land, and the growth of our community-focused farm. Your money stays here and strengthens our community. We hope you know that your purchases at our booths really do matter! We look forward to seeing you again next season! In the meantime, our self-serve farm store will continue to be open while we still have veggies for sale. Happy Thanksgiving! Kim, Alex, Lark, and Rosemary

We had a busy day yesterday harvesting, washing and packing for week 18 of the Farm Share. The kids add an extra level of chaos but also an extra level of fun and cuteness, so it all balances out.

Garlic braids are back! Did you know that a third of the garlic found in Canadian grocery stores is from China? Only about 10% is produced domestically, with the remainder hailing from the US, Argentina and Mexico. I don't know the reasons why this is - but I DO know that we love growing garlic. And eating it - Alex in particular, who eats it raw and is always leaving a pile of salt on the table and some sticky garlic peels in his wake.... Our garlic will last til the spring. We plant it every fall from the bulbs we grew the year before. We mulch, compost, weed and irrigate, then pick and cure it. Finally, we clean the garlic and cut off the stems. In braid form, you have not only flavourful garlic, but something beautiful to look at in your kitchen. It makes an entirely unique gift that people can actually use. We bring them when we go visiting. You can find our garlic braided, or not, @komokacommunitymarket and @downtownstrathroymarket this Saturday - and at our farm store as well.

This week we say goodbye to this guy - my 14 year old nephew Tristan. He escaped the big smoke this summer to spend it in the farm, where he enjoyed going to market, harvesting, tinkering and fixing, and overall getting outside, doing things with his hands and being part of the busy hustle and bustle of the season. He woke up early and worked into the dusk. Apart from farming, he also did a lot of childcare and his little cousins will miss him so much. We're really going to miss him too, and the farm will feel it when he's gone. Good luck in Grade 10 @triscuit_57!

Swipe left for before/after.. An ode to Sarah, who has been with us for two seasons and puts in so much energy into our farm. We are so grateful for her generosity of spirit and the genuine way she cares about the farm, starting every single seed in the greenhouse and then tending them through to harvest. Whether it's googling plant diseases, keeping records about seed varieties, showing kindness to our littles ones, tolerating our dog interrupting (eating) her lunch (and her... shoes), putting in long hours to get things done, adding that extra effort to make sure something is done right, searching through all the farm share bags to find that missing bag of lettuce, or bringing us a cider for our post-farm share drink (and so, so much more) - she brings so much to our work and our daily lives and makes things better with everything she does. Thanks, Sarah. See more

We're growing seedings again for your gardens this year! Despite the ongoing worries of a pandemic, spring is still on schedule! What are you excited to grow? Personally I can't wait for my life to be full of cherry tomatoes once again.

The @efao2 conference is a yearly highlight for us as we get to soak up some amazing knowledge while connecting with a truly inspiring and supportive network of farmers. This year its gone virtual but we're still learning lots and getting pumped up for next season just the same. #efao2020

Indisputably the best thing grown by us this year - our baby girl Lark Annabel Glazirin. Born on October 6th at the exact same time in the morning as her big sister Rosemary. Loving all the love and looking forward to a slow and cozy winter watching her grow.

Bunching carrots in the packhouse. It wasn't a good carrot season for us this year - we had a lot of plantings succumb to rot - so we're all feeling pretty good about this harvest.
