Sisu: a Finnish concept of resilience that can be helpful in stressful times. It means the ability to adapt to recover from change or misfortune and never giving up, no matter what you’re going through. Resilience isn’t just a way to get through tough stuff though it is considered to be a key foundation of mental health and well-being. Sisu is energy is determination in the face of adversities that are more demanding than usual. It's about reaching beyond what we think we are capable of physical, emotional and mentally. Sisu is a power that comes from within. ‘Extraordinary courage and determination in the face of adversity. It’s about not seeing a silver lining in the clouds, and yet jumping into the storm anyways. At the core of sisu is the idea that in each of us there is more strength than meets the eye.’ Emilia Lahti

What does it mean to be affiliated with the Canadian Federation of Osteopaths (CFO)? The Canadian Federation of Osteopaths represents nine provincial associati...ons across Canada, which are in the process of establishing the manual practice of osteopathy as a regulated profession, on behalf of their members, who are educated in the manual practice of osteopathy. The CFO is also a member of the European Federation & Forum for Osteopathy (EFFO) and the Osteopathic International Alliance (OIA). SOME Health professions are REGULATED. Osteopathy is not. What does that mean for you, the public? There isn’t a single regulated college that oversees all indi...viduals who practice osteopathy following the Health Professions Act (HPA) https://open.alberta.ca/publications/h07 The HPA requires that colleges carry out governance responsibilities in a manner that protects and serves the public interest. Health profession colleges do this by developing, maintaining and enforcing professional regulations, standards of practice and codes of ethics. https://www.alberta.ca/regulated-health-professions.aspx Don’t worry! The AAOMT is following national (Canadian Federation of Osteopaths) and international standards (Osteopathic International Alliance) for our members to ensure our members meet the highest standards of practice and follow a code of ethics. I remember the first time someone sheepishly said, I didn’t even know what boundaries were. I smiled. Neither did I. Even as a practicing psychologist, I didn...’t fully understand how to set them. Or if I even could set them. Just the thought of them sent a chill down my codependent spine. Then, I started practicing. I began speaking my limits. I witnessed people close to me become reactive, or just completely ignore my boundaries. Just the process of setting boundaries can give you eye opening insights into the dynamics of your relationships. Healthy people set + hold boundaries. They demonstrate self love + self worth by compassionately + objectively speaking them. When someone sets a boundary with them, they honor the other persons limits. Boundaries are the foundation of healthy relationships. For many with unresolved trauma, boundaries feel like abandonment. It’s important to understand that you’re not responsible for the emotional state of others. How a person reacts to a boundary, is for them. How you respond to that reaction is for you. You always have choice. What is your BIGGEST struggle with boundaries? #selfhealers

I am a recovering people-pleaser, meaning I spent a great majority of my life worrying too much about what other people think and deriving my worth from externa...l approval. Setting boundaries has always been hard for me, but six months ago, I came face to face with a painful truth about what this way of life was costing me. As I committed to doing the work of setting protective boundaries, I was able to share them in real-time with my Soul Shift online course members. After giving a talk on the six small steps I was taking to connect to my true self and honor my needs, the response was overwhelmingly supportive. I was not the only one seeking to reclaim my life. Today, I share these 6 small steps with you: 1) UNDERSTAND THE WHY It is vitally important to recognize is that years ago, you concluded that in order to feel safe, love, or accepted you needed to be helpful and overly accommodating. This worked for a while until you realized you are not being true to yourself, your needs, and your goals. You realize this people-pleasing behavior is deeply engrained, which is the first step toward making positive change. 2) CELEBRATE THE AWARENESSS You are now aware that your people pleasing behavior has alienated you from your true, authentic self, and you are no longer willing to accept this. You have also become aware that pleasing and accommodating is NOT the path to acceptance and inner peace as you may have originally believed. Recognizing that you deserve to be valued is significant and worthy of celebration. 3) PAUSE So, now that you know these things, you can pause anytime you feel compelled to "go along" with something even if it's not what you want to do. Pause and remind yourself that YOU HAVE A CHOICE. You do not have to go along just because someone wants you to. Ask yourself: What do I want to do? And then take a deep breath and say it. 4) PRACTICE Voicing your needs takes awareness, courage, and practice. If you fail to speak up and realize afterwards that you went along when you did not want to, gently remind yourself that this was how you navigated life for so long, and change does not happen overnightbut you are trying. Choice by choice, you are listening to YOUR needs and you are speaking them. This is significant. 5) NOTICE Notice what happens when you voice your needs. You may be surprised that you were not rejected as you expected you’d be. And if you are rejected, please remember, you are NOT responsible for other people’s response to your boundaries. You will still have your self-respect because voicing your NEEDS and your LIMITS is an important act of self-reclamation. You will feel peace because you stayed true to yourself. If people love you for what you do for them, then some evaluating might be necessary regarding those relationships. 6) LEARN Learning about your needs and innermost thoughts will help you identify where boundaries are being crossed. Take some time to explore your needs through journaling. Give yourself permission to feel what you feel and permission to acknowledge what you REALLY need. Learning about yourself is not a time for judgment or criticism; it is a time for curiosity, compassion, and acceptance. This work you are doing is the deepest act of self-care there is. It is a process that will not only better your life but also the lives of those who are following your example.
