Helen Pridmore is a singer and sound artist, with a focus on contemporary scored music, experimental music and improvisation. She has performed across Canada and the US, including a solo appearance at Carnegie Hall. Helen has also performed in Europe, Mexico and Japan. She has three CDs to her name, including between the shore and the ships, which won the 2013 East Coast Music Award for Best Classical Recording. Helen’s current focus is on the technology of the voice and th...e body, with explorations into the concepts of aural beauty, space and silence. She is writing and performing new works for voice that employ both structure and improvisation. One of her current projects is her solo voice work Sor Juana and the Silences, which will be touring Canada in the 2020-21 season. Helen also shares her ideas with students and community members via workshops and improvisation sessions. With degrees from the Universities of Saskatchewan and Toronto, and the Eastman School of Music, Helen is currently a faculty member in Music and Creative Technologies at the University of Regina. Helen is one of the multiPLAY artists being featured in the Open Ears Festival. When asked about her piece 'Coffee Time' and jamming in virtual space, Helen stated the following. Live music is best. As a singer who is focused on the technology of the human body, I so much prefer performing in a live space, to live audiences. My physical technology works best that way, and the visceral relationship between singer's body and listener's body becomes strong. But given the current restrictions, I am very grateful to be working with people brilliant in technological "savvy", who create ways for us to improvise together in a virtual space. The connection -- the human connection so important to performance -- is still there, albeit in a very different way. "Only connect" -- E.M. Forster. The Open Ears Festival is taking place from June 3, 2021 to June 6, 2021. MultiPLAY is being featured on June 5, 2021. Make sure you check out Helen’s work along with all of the other multiPLAY artists (Rebecca Caines, Michelle Stewart, John Campbell, Holophon, Ian Campbell, Michael Waterman & James Harley)! The Remotions Live Concert is today! Norman Adams is the Artistic Director of suddenlyLISTEN Music, and is a cellist, organizer, teacher and creator. Norman is a former Principal Cellist of Symphony Nova Scotia (1991 2018), has been guest Principal Cellist of the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and has performed chamber, new and improvised music throughout Canada, the US, Europe and the UK, (most recently at La Biennale di Venezia 2018). His passion is creating, performing ...and presenting new, improvised and electronic music. Norman is also one of the artists in The Remotions and when asked about his involvement in the collective, he stated the following: For The Remotions, I play the cello and I listen. I try to extend the cello sound beyond the expected. And I listen to my fellow collaborators to find where I fit, or what I can add, or how I can disrupt the music! The Remotions Live Concert is tomorrow! WL Altman, one of the artists in The Remotions is a composer, performer and interdisciplinary artist from Saskatchewan, Canada. His work includes concert music for instruments and voices with live and interactive technology, as well as immersive installations and performance art. When asked about his involvement in The Remotions, WL gave the following statement: I run random live sounds through digital audio processing on a computer. ...With The Remotions, I focus on listening. I monitor the spatialized "ambisonic" mix of the group, and try to respond from a deep space within me where the listening takes place. I embody the qualities of the sounds I hear and respond impulsively, in the moment, with my own sounds. Check out The Remotions Live Concert on Saturday, March 20 at 7:00pm CST! Please note that due to the time change that took place on March 14th, the new times for The Remotions live concert on Saturday, March 20 are 7pm CST, 6pm PDT, 9pm EDT and 10pm ADT. Stacey Bliss is an imaginative (auto)ethnographer, sound artist, and Gong teacher, student, and performer. As a SSHRC postdoctoral fellow in the Faculty of Media, Art, and Performance at the University of Regina, 2019-2021, she is creating a sonic ethnography of/with Gong master-teachers and exploring possibilities of what she calls resonant literacy. Stacey is also one of the artists in The Remotions and when asked about her involvement in the collective, she stated the foll...owing: Jamming with The Remotions is improvisatory bliss and fun! Mostly, I listen and then respond to what is happening with the group and through the soundscapes. I play symphonic and wind gongs with a myriad of things including: felt mallets, rubber mallets, my hands, scarves, e-wands, and whatever I am prompted to try anew. I also incorporate sounds from crystal bowls, a conch (shell), a kalimba, a water bowl, chimes, my voice, and tuning forks. Woo, forks, spoons...maybe I need to expand my soundscape horizons even more?! Check out The Remotions Live Concert on Saturday, March 20 at 7:00pm CST! Rebecca Caines, the lead artist and facilitator of the multiPLAY project, is an interdisciplinary community-engaged artist and curator, who works in contemporary performance, sound art, and installation, and new media art. She is also one of the artists in The Remotions and when asked around her involvement in the collective, Rebecca gave the following statement: In the Remotions I perform live sound art using iPad apps that include iPad musical instruments, online radio sta...tions, sound effect generators, and apps for sound modulation. Many of the apps I use take advantage of features of the iPad device to enable change of the sound by movement of the device itself, including pitch bending, panning, and effects via horizontal or vertical motion or shaking or vibration of the iPad. I improvise with the limits and possibilities of electronic sound as I improvise with my collaborators on collaborative improvised music, performance, and visuals. IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please note that due to the time change that took place on March 14th, the new times for The Remotions live concert on Saturday (March 20) are 7pm CST, 6pm PDT, 9pm EDT and 10pm ADT! Helen Pridmore is a singer and sound artist, with a focus on contemporary scored music, experimental music and improvisation. Helen gave the following statement on her involvement in The Remotions! I'm a singer. As a member of the Remotions, I utilize the technology of the body and the human voice. I explore improvisational ideas through "standard" vocalizing (melodies, riffs), and via extended vocal techniques such as multiphonics, overtone singing, and random vocal sounds. I rarely use text as I prefer to be part of the band, and text always draws attention to itself. Check out The Remotions Live Concert on Saturday, March 20 at 7:00pm CST! You won’t want to miss it! The Remotions will be streaming a live concert on the multiPLAY website this coming Saturday, March 20! John Campbell, creator of and one of the artists in The Remotions, is an emerging artist who explores agency, interactivity, self and perception of self; informed by a contemporary climate where avatar/person/online profile blur, and where human and machine are becoming increasingly difficult to differentiate. When asked about his involvement in The Remotions, John stated t...he following: I created the conceptual idea for The Remotions. I've also realized the vision by creating the infrastructure to make it happen. From a technical point of view, I put together and manage the realtime audio server, storage server, 360 video recording, live 360 video streaming, realtime ambisonic mix, realtime 360 video mixing. Additionally I edit weekly recordings, including post ambisonic editing, post 360 video editing, and distribution amongst the group. I use Jamulus, Zoom, Reaper, ambix vst plug-ins, Carla, and a host of other audio/video tools. Check out The Remotions Live Concert on Saturday, March 20 at 7:00pm CST!
