Murphy's Camping on the Ocean 28.06.2021

After much deliberation, we have made the decision to remain closed until June 1st. We have taken this additional measure of remaining closed for a few extra weeks because we are committed to the well-being of our staff, families, and Wild Islands Coast communities, and we are also committed to the greater cause of taming the current COVID-19 outbreak in Nova Scotia. We understand this decision means disappointment for many and we are very sorry for the inconvenience it cause...s. We are aware and understand that the current provincial and municipal restrictions legally allow travel within municipal boundaries (e.g. people living within HRM can travel within HRM, https://novascotia.ca/coronavirus/travel/). However, just because we can, doesn’t mean we should. The above linked web page clearly states, If you live in a large municipality (like Halifax Regional Municipality), your community is considered to be no further away from your home than you need to travel to access essential products and services (like the closest grocery store or gas station). From this, it is clear that we should all limit unnecessary travel and remain as close to home as reasonably possible in an effort to slow the spread of the virus. We are hopeful that Nova’s Scotia’s current restrictions and ongoing vaccine rollout will curb the spread of COVID-19 in short order so we can all get back to normal quickly and enjoy the summer. In short, here’s what this means for Murphy’s Camping on the Ocean and its guests. 1) We will remain closed to all guests and visitors until the end of May. Our office will remain closed for in person visits. You may continue to contact us via email, phone, etc... 2) We will not take new bookings for reservation dates within May, but we will continue to take reservations for June 1st onward. Our cancellation policy remains unchanged from last year and we will continue to issue full refunds for any cancellations that are initiated by us (e.g. such as this notice) and for those that test positive or otherwise must self-isolate due to COVID-19. 3) We are cancelling all reservations up to and including May 31st. We will contact all guests who have a reservation booked in May and discuss options for re-scheduling later in the season or to issue a full refund. 4) Seasonal guests are prohibited from staying overnight at the campground in May. A refund for the missed nights will be determined and issued accordingly. Contactless appointments may be made in advance for moving trailers to and from the campground. Call or email to make arrangements. This past year and the present lockdown has been difficult on all of us and we know that some camping would be very much enjoyed right now. Unfortunately, we feel remaining closed just a bit longer is the responsible action to take at this time. We appreciate your understanding. Sincerely, Ryan Murphy

Murphy's Camping on the Ocean 11.10.2020

Paul checking out a piece of turf that is being frittered away by the sea [near Laybold Island, 100 Wild Islands]. It is a remnant of a previous era when the se...a level was much lower, the coastline further to the east, and the land covered with forests and bogs. Over time the rising sea [coupled perhaps with the sinking land] invaded river valleys and surrounded the hills, creating islands. The existing vegetation has slowly been eroded over time leaving these earlier remnants struggling to survive. It is a process that continues to this day and when they finally succumb to their unwinnable battle with the elements only the barren bedrock will remain.

Today is International Beach Day and its only proper to share photos from one of the most beautiful and pristine beaches Ive ever seen, Psyche Cove of Taylor ...Head Provincial Park. Nova Scotias Eastern Shore is known for its undisturbed beauty and this provincial park helps preserves the areas amazing landscape. This beach has the finest sand Ive ever touched and with its location being so far from any large populations you have so much of the beach to yourself. #RediscoverNS #VisitNovaScotia #CreatorCoastNS

Deep in the woods on Liscomb Island. Note the bottom inscription! Probably not a common occurrence these days. "The fog had just moved in and shrouded our isla...nd campsite on the Eastern Shore in a thick mist. The silence was absolute. I made my way under the lichen-covered spruce in search of mushrooms for the evening meal, anxious to return to the warmth of the fire. My gaze wandered over the moss-carpeted forest floor to what, at first, seemed only to be one of those uniquely positioned stones left by the retreating glaciers. I took little notice. This scoured coastline is littered with such remnants of our geological past. Then another stone caught my attention, and anotherall three in an unnatural alignment. Curious, I edged towards them, unable to suppress the feeling of unease rising in my stomach. Suddenly, the explanation dawned on me: I was in the middle of a graveyard! Inscriptions on the markers and depressions in the earth removed any doubts." Excerpt from "Sea Kayaking in Nova Scotia" See more

Congratulations to my beautiful wife Emma for successfully navigating the small business world, as Uprooted Market & Cafe turns 5 years old today! Like any busi...ness, there have been many ups and downs and I think its fair to say that the past 6 months have been more challenging than she ever could have anticipated when she first opened the doors to the community in 2015. Emmas passion for the business, and particularly her passion for providing sustainably grown food to help combat climate change, is so inspiring! Im fortunate that I get to see the behind the scenes and the ideas & plans for the future. Im excited for whats still to unfold! Thank you Emma for bringing Uprooted into existence. Only an hour from Halifax, the Wild Islands archipelago (750+ islands) stretches for over 100 kilometres and offers you an opportunity to immerse yourself in the vast natural settings that are largely untouched since the last ice age and (mostly) as Samuel de Champlain found them when charting these islands in 1607. Join Ryan, a 7th generation Murphy to live and work in Murphy Cove, as you pack in as many sights, sounds and islands as possible in a stunning 2-hour private exc...ursion. You will learn about the history and topography of the area, perhaps jump off for a short walk on the beach and try to view some of the birds and animals that find refuge on these islands. Join us Saturday, July 4th for a sea kayakjng paddle around Owls Head, on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia! *Rain date Sunday, July 5th. . . Over the past seve...ral months, a debate has surrounded the planned sale of public land at Owls Head and Little Harbour, to a private developer planning to build a series of golf courses. This topic has divided the community between those that consider it a good economic choice, and those that are concerned that a precious and pristine coastline is about to be lost to us. As Nova Scotia already has very little public coastal land remaining. . . On July 4th you can come and see for yourself what is as stake. Coastal Adventures will lead a day long paddle along this beautiful, rugged shoreline, and out to the adjacent Island outposts. The trip will be lead by Dr. Scott Cunningham, a local naturalist familiar with the area, who will introduce participants to the flora, fauna, and geology of this exceptional area. . . Cost: $90 per person (with own kayak and equipment) OR $125 per person (kayak and equipment supplied by Coastal Adventures) . . Photos: 1-2. Owls head 3. The public land in danger of being sold 4.
