Rail Safety Week September 21st - 27th Think you can beat a train? A motorist is 40 times more likely to die in a train-vehicle collision than in a crash with another motor vehicle.
Our roads are not a racetrack! At 12:00 am on September 15, 2020, Selkirk RCMP officers on patrol noticed two southbound vehicles racing each other on Highway 9... at speeds of 120 km/h in an 80 km/h zone (they had just exited a 50 km/h zone). One vehicle was stopped by the marked cruiser and the other was stopped a short while later by another RCMP cruiser. Both vehicles were impounded for seven days and the drivers, a 33-year-old male and an 18-year-old male, were each issued tickets for Racing with another motor vehicle (fined $672) and Speeding (fined $573).
The red car was at a complete stop behind a bus stopped at a train crossing. The blue Jeep was texting and driving. The driver of the red car is okay, shockingl...y, and luckily he was alone because a passenger likely would not have survived. Please don’t text and drive. You are not special. You are not better at it than everybody else. You are distracted. Get over yourself. Think about other people and get off your damn phone while driving. See more
A 37-year-old female was clocked going 230km/h in traffic last night at 11pm on Highway 59, near Grande Point, before suddenly driving down into a ditch of tall... grass. When the officer approached her, she said the clutch was blown on her bike and she was simply laying down in the tall grass because she was tired from trying to get it out of the ditch. Turns out, she also had an expired license. 5 tickets totalling $1785, including drive carelessly. The fine for speeding at 130 over will be determined in court. Thankfully, no one was killed. #noexcuses
Despite an above average year of fatal motor vehicle collisions on Manitoba roads, RCMP are still seeing excessive speeding. On September 5, 2020, at 1:05am, in... the RM of East St Paul, a 22-year-old male was caught travelling at 71 km/h over the speed limit in a 100 zone on Highway 59, approaching the Perimeter Highway. He stated that he was in a hurry to get home and knew the drill because he had received a speeding ticket just a few months prior. As he spoke, the officer could smell liquor on his breath and asked for a breath sample. The driver failed and is now facing a Criminal Code of Canada charge for Operation while Impaired, a driver’s license suspension for 3 months, vehicle tow and impoundment for 30 days, a fine of $979 for speeding, and a serious offense notice for a meeting with MPI. Later that same morning, at 9:41am, on Highway 6, a 24-year-old female was caught travelling at 72 km/h over the speed limit in a 100 zone near St. Laurent. She asked the officer if he could let her off with a warning. She was given a speeding ticket with a fine of $992, plus a serious offence notice for a license review with MPI. With winter driving just around the corner, there is no better time for drivers to start adjusting their driving habits to make Manitoba’s roads safer. Speed kills. Slow down.
On September 7, 2020, at 3:20 am, officers from the Thompson RCMP responded to a report of a single-vehicle collision in Paint Lake Provincial Park. A witness... advised police that a vehicle had driven into the brush in the campground and struck a tree. Officers located the vehicle and found an unresponsive 17-year-old male, pinned underneath it, who was pronounced deceased on scene. The driver of the vehicle, a 17-year-old male from Thompson, was located at the scene and arrested for Impaired Driving Causing Death and taken back to the Detachment for a breath test. The driver was found to have a blood alcohol concentration nearly twice the legal limit. The 17-year-old was later released from custody with charges pending review. Thompson RCMP along with a Forensic Collision Reconstructionist continue to investigate.
It isn’t always teens & 20-somethings. This 51yo male driver was pulled over yesterday in East St. Paul, for going 108 km/h in a 50!! Also given a $174 fine for a peeling license plate + $809 for speeding + serious offense notice for license review with MPI. #noexcuses
We often get requests for more traffic enforcement along Henderson Hwy, so we listened & increased our patrols. Just before 10am on August 29, Red River North R...CMP Detachment caught a 21-year-old testing the performance of his car in a curve doing 124 km/h in a 70 zone. Fined $756 + license review with MPI. #noexcuses See more
At 3:10 pm, on August 24, 2020, Killarney RCMP responded to a report of an injured male lying next to his vehicle off of Road 125 West, south of the intersectio...n with Highway 3, located 16 kilometres west of Highway 10, in the Municipality of Deloraine-Winchester. Officers believe that a pickup truck, being driven by a 22-year-old male from the Municipality of Deloraine-Winchester, collided into the rear trailer of a large gravel truck without the driver of this vehicle being made aware. The gravel truck had continued driving on while the 22-year-old’s vehicle came to a stop in a field adjacent to the road. He was transported to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Killarney RCMP, along with a Forensic Collision Reconstructionist, continue to investigate.
This weekend, a 27-year-old male from Winnipeg was clocked going 188 km/h in a 100 zone on Highway 59 near Willow Ridge Rd. When stopped, he told the officer th...at he looked down and was only doing 110kmh, then stated his speedometer may be out. Never heard that one before! Fined for speeding & issued a serious offence notice for a license review with MPI. #noexcuses See more
