Common fungus can appear as black, grey or brown discolouration of leaves which eventually fall from flowers, vegetable plants, shrubs, fruit, Lilac and other shade trees. This includes rust and mildew. Cool, damp, humid, windy weather (i.e. Newfoundland) conditions are ideal for fungus to grow and spread. Stop by Murrays Garden Centre for a fungicide treatment.

Lawn Maintenance: Fertilize in July only if grass is well watered and temps are not above 25 with a high nitrogen fertilizer (ie 20-0-10). Fertilize in Fall with low nitrogen (ie 6-12-12). Murrays Garden Centre provides a full range of lawn maintenance services. Call us for a quote.

Apples are the most popular fruit tree for our area. They can be quite hardy and produce fruit year after year if cultivated correctly. Visit Murrays Garden Centre for a selection of fruit trees including pear, cherry and crabapple. Also ask about our tree planting and pruning services.

Blueberries require full sun, low pH, fertilized soil and grow to 2 to 3 ft high. Container grown plants can be planted in summer and fall. Dig a hole twice the diameter of the root ball, mix the removed soil with compost or peat moss in a 1:1 ratio, prune any dead or weak branches, and water thoroughly after planting. Murrays Garden Centre has Blueberry plants as well as all of the necessary planting materials.

Sawflies can affect a variety of vegetation including current, cherry, pine and larch trees. Evidence of sawfly damage includes holes or notches in leaves and/ or complete devouring of leaves. Visit Murrays Garden Centre for your insecticidal soap to assist you with this pest. We carry concentrate as well as a convenient ready-to-use spritz bottle.

The purpose of pruning is to produce strong, healthy, attractive plants. Trees and shrubs may be pruned any time of the year. There are products on the market for treating the raw wood after pruning a tree; however, it is recommended to not use these products. A healthy plant will heal naturally and any substance added to the cut can trap moisture and disease. Murrays Garden Centre stocks a variety of aesthetically pleasing shrubs and trees.

This is a great example of why not to ignore bracket fungus growing on trees. Interior decay can cause mature maples to fall prematurely in high wind situations. If you notice white half-moons on your tree like photographed here, it is usually a clear sign of interior rot. @ St. Johns, Newfoundland and Labrador
