Join Jpl Montreal and Musée de l'Holocauste Montréal for a presentation of rare books and objects from their collections. These historic #artefacts chronicle over 350 years of the complex connections and disconnections between the Jewish and Christian communities of Europe. In partnership with Max and Tessie Zelikovitz Centre for Jewish Studies and Centre for Holocaust Education and Scholarship. (Événement en anglais)
These men were photographed in a ghetto in Poland, circa 1940. Two of them are wearing a white armband with a blue star of David. On November 23, 1939, all Jews over ten years old and living in the General Government, the part of Poland occupied by Nazi Germany, had to wear such armbands. This measure facilitated the identification of Jews and their persecution. Heavy penalties were inflicted for non-compliance of this rule. It also simplified putting Jews into ghettos in Poland, and, later, their deportation to killing centers.
Thank you to FWA (Favourite Website Awards) for featuring our latest virtual exhibit Witnesses to History, Keepers of Memory as site of the day. What an honour for the Museum and our partners at Akufen Studio!
#OnThisDay 75 years ago, the Nuremberg trials began in Germany. Twenty-two former Nazi leaders were charged with conspiracy, crimes against peace, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, the latter being prosecuted for the first time. Visit our virtual timeline to learn more about the ongoing pursuit of justice after the Holocaust and the trials that took place:
On November 15, 1938, Jewish children were banned from public schools, which increased the exclusion of the Jewish community. Hear Ellen Samuel recall her childhood in the Nazi Germany to learn more about the various stages of the Holocaust.
The heroism of these individuals lies not only in their survival during the Holocaust, but also in their efforts to repair the world and educate the next generation about the dangers of racism and antisemitism. Thank you to Niv for a powerful piece about our new virtual exhibit Witnesses to History, Keepers of Memory. Visit the exhibit here: https://witnessestohistory.museeholocauste.ca/
On November 9th, a ceasefire was reached between Armenia and Azerbaijan concerning the Nagorno-Karabakh region (Artsakh for Armenians), which unfortunately does not mean the end of suffering for Armenians. As students of École arménienne Sourp Hagop expressed in an interview with La Presse's Rima Elkouri, the silence and inaction of democratic countries allowed the violence to continue: https://www.lapresse.ca//2020-11-14/le-coeur-brise-des-arm Our virtual exhibit United Against Genocide reminds us of the importance of the international community's engagement in preventing human rights violations.
