Please stop lying to children. In school today I had my time to meet with the students and see if they wanted to be in the Band. One boy said "I can't, I don't ...have time with football." This kid was in 5th Grade! He's 10! Band is a school subject just like math or reading. No one is going around saying "I can't do math because I don't have time with volleyball." I don't even blame coaches. The coaches in this town and I have a great working relationship. I think society is trying so hard to make pro athletes out of pre-teens that the second they express an interest in a sport, kids feel bad for exploring what could be other passions for fear of being perceived as "not dedicated" enough. This will forever be a soapbox of mine. Music is supposed to be a social and community activity that can also be pursued on your own time as a hobby. You can work a full time job AND play guitar at home. You can be a stay at home mom AND play clarinet in your spare time. You can be an NFL player AND a jazz saxophonist. Some of my BEST student musicians have been involved in multiple sports and activities. Kids should be allowed to feel like they have the time for multiple enjoyments and grow into well rounded humans. Kids should be allowed to be kids (tune in next time for my rant on kids taking too many college credit classes in high school) You can do both and do them well. Please stop lying to children.
