You may not know that she wrote "I Will Always Love You" which was later made famous by Whitney Houston. Not only that, but she actually wrote "I Will Always Love You" and her hit song "Jolene" in the SAME DAY! WOW!

It's Woman Composer Wednesday! This week's composer is: Pauline Viardot. Viardot was a well regarded operatic soprano, voice teacher, and composer during the 19th century. She studied piano with Franz Liszt and was good friends with Clara Schumann (remember her?). She also came from a very musical family and was closely linked to the bel canto tradition with famous singer Maria Malibran as her sister and influential voice teacher Manuel Garcia as her father. Throughout her li...fe she composed over 250 pieces in a wide variety of genres and styles. She had an interest in a wide range of styles and poetry from different nations including France, Germany, and Russia, which are reflected in the pieces she composed. Most of her vocal works were translated into other languages and published in other countries. Our selection this week is Hai Luli performed by Cecilia Bartoli! Enjoy! :) Hai Luli: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=na1gMRcWI5U
It's Woman Composer Wednesday! This week's feature is Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel. You may already be familiar with the music of her brother, Felix Mendelssohn. Fanny was a fantastic composer and piano player but due to gender expectations of the 19th century, Fanny was discouraged from a career in music whereas Felix was encouraged. Fanny loved the music of Bach and he was a source of inspiration for many of her pieces. In her life, she composed over 460 pieces, including "Songs without Words," a genre that Felix is famous for. However, it is now believed that Fanny pioneered the genre. Today's listening is one of these pieces: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74aUFgbUN1Y To learn more about Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel's music check out this article from Classic FM: https://www.classicfm.com/disc/fanny-and-felix-mendelssohn/
