Daniel-François-Esprit Auber (1782-1871) was one of the most famous composers of the 19th century. Working with his lifelong collaborator, the renowned dramatist and librettist Eugéne Scribe, he gave definitive form to the uniquely French genres of grand historical opera (La Muette de Portici) and opéra-comique (Fra Diavolo). His overtures were famous all over the world, as much for their engaging titles (The Bronze Horse, The Black Domino, The Crown Diamonds) as for their dancing elegance and fluent melodies. Raymond Bisha introduces a new programme of overtures and entr’actes from Auber’s stage works conducted by Dario Salvi, a specialist in the restoration and performance of rare works, in particular those of Meyerbeer and Auber.

Three Gs and an E flat, declaimed Ta-ta-ta-taaa!, is perhaps the best known phrase in all of classical music. The notes form the opening motif of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, a work that has enjoyed enduring popularity since its first performance in 1808.This album presents various interpretations the symphony’s opening movement has received from a number of conductors, including Otto Klemperer (18851973), Michael Gielen (19272019), Stanisaw Skrowaczewski (19232017) and Ádám Fischer (b. 1949), giving the listener convenient comparisons and historic hindsight. "Le 6e volume de cette intégrale de l’œuvre pour piano seul de Chopin fait la part belle aux mazurkas. Louis Lortie interprète ici quatre groupes de quatre mazurkas, les Opus 6, 24, 41 et 67, qu’il entoure des Polonaises nos 3 et 4, de la Fantaisie Opus 49 et des Variations sur La ci darem la mano du Don Giovanni de Mozart. On le voit, le pianiste continue à mêler les types de partitions dans son périple. Autre constante : le son avec un piano Fazioli enregistré au Potton... Hall de Dunwich dans le Suffolk. Once in a while you hear such incredibly beautiful music for the first time that you just can’t understand why it has remained under wraps for so long. The Violin Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 by the Italian-born composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco are a case in point. Originally championed in the 1920s and 30s by no less an artist that Jascha Heifetz, they now have a 21st-century advocate in the brilliant Beijing-born violinist Tianwa Yang.
