This week hear Conundrum in a virtual concert from St John’s Anglican Church in Lunenburg. Conundrum is the dynamic flute and harp duo of Jack Chen and Ellen Gibling. Conundrum balances classic repertoire with challenging and innovative recent compositions, in particular new works by Canadians. Hannah Krebs (Na Cleasaichean) and Katherine MacLeod (Manager of Interpretation) welcome Musique Royale and audiences to the Malagawatch Church for this evenings concert featuring Helios Vocal Ensemble. Did you know tonights concert is featured in a church that was moved over lake and hill? The Malagawatch Church part of the Highland Village Museum overlooks a spectacular view of the Bras dOr Lakes in Iona, Cape Breton. The church was donated to the Highland Village Museum and in 2003 was moved across water and land to where it sits today. It was built in 1874 on the shores of the River Denys Basin in the contemporary Scottish style. It was a Presbyterian church that in its initial setting served a primarily Gaelic speaking population.

The Renaissance was a time of eager experimentation by composers as they explored the heights of divine devotion and the depths of human passion. And often, the same composers would go to both extremes! Sacrilicious is a lively journey, guided along by Helios Vocal Ensemble, through some of historys most daring vocal music, both sacred and profane, featuring composers from France, Italy, Spain and Germany, and including rare works by a remarkable sixteenth-century woman. "Sacrilicious" was filmed at historic Malagawatch Church at Highland Village Museum in Iona, Cape Breton and features soprano Elisabeth Stones, countertenor Andrew Pickett, tenor Michael van der Gaag, and bass Simon Blake. This Saturday, September 5th at 7:30 pm, the virtual concert is released on Facebook and YouTube, remaining available for two weeks.

Earlier this year Ifan Williams stepped down from his role of chair of the Musique Royale board. Having served in this position for 21 years, he has been a force in bringing great music to Nova Scotia, and this means so much to Musique Royale. He is seen here with fellow musicians of the Perseus Trio (Sharon Gow-Knickle & Bonnie Romkey). The Musique Royale board is delighted to welcome Kate Therien as our new chair. Kate is an elementary music teacher with the CSAP in Dartmouth. She served on the former board of the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra for several years, and more recently has provided much support to Capella Regalis Men & Boys Choir, with whom her son has been singing for the past few years.

Hear Devins Musique Royale virtual concert tomorrow evening on Facebook and YouTube, where he plays Chopins Ballade No. 2 in F Major Op. 38 and the Sonata in F Minor Op. 57 Appassionata by Beethoven at 7:30 pm, filmed at St. Davids Presbyterian Church. Thirteen-year-old Devin Huang is a Grade 8 student at Sacred Heart School of Halifax and has been a student ...of Ms. Lynn Stodola since 2016. Since being introduced to piano at the age of seven, he has shown great enthusiasm towards piano performance, both solo and chamber. Most recently, in August 2020, Devin was named by CBC Music on the Canadas hot 30 under 30 classical Musicians. Devin has been a regular participant in numerous Nova Scotia Kiwanis Music Festivals, placing first in all of his classes and winning several named prizes and scholarships, including the prestigious Presidents Cup for the past two years as well as the Dr. Piano and Yamaha Canada Rose Bowl in 2020. He has also been the Junior Piano prize winner at the Nova Scotia Provincial Finals in 2018 and 2019 as well as winner of the Nova Scotia Registered Teachers Association Scholarship Competition in both Senior and Advanced Divisions, respectively, in the same years. He has been a National Finalist for the Canadian Music Competition since 2017, winning first prize each year in his age category as well as the overall Grand Prize in all instruments, age 11 - 14 in 2018. This past October, Devin had the honour to be invited to play at the Lieutenant Governors House which was recorded for Eastlink television. In November he was featured soloist with Nova Sinfonia, performing Mozarts Piano Concerto K. 467, and in December he made his recital debut on the Cecilia Concert Series. Devin has received tremendous support from the music community, receiving awards from the Halifax Ladies Musical Club and scholarships from the Nova Scotia Talent Trust. Devin is honoured and proud to be the first recipient of the newly established Peggy Corkum Piano Scholarship, generated by Musique Royale. He is featured by Musuqie Royale on their 35th Summer Festival by a virtual concert being released on August 29th, 2020. The generosity and support of these organizations continue to inspire Devin to strive to become a professional pianist.

This Saturdays online concert is entitled "Praying and Dancing", featuring four cellists: Rachel Desoer, Shimon Walt, Ben Marmen, and Priscilla Lee, performing at St. Barnabas Anglican Church in Blue Rocks. In this time of forced isolation, the program offers music to lift the spirits. Featuring music by Bach, hear a mixed selection of works starring the singing quality of cellos. Also included are some dances to remind us of celebrations weve had and will return to. This music is an expression of hope that we will be together in the same space enjoying music before long. "Praying and Dancing" will be released at 7:30 pm on Saturday August 22 on Facebook and YouTube, and will be available for the following two weeks, as part of our Summer Festival, running every Saturday from August through September.

Thank you to the Chronicle Herald for your writeup this morning about Michael R. Denny performing at Government House. On Saturday, Michael R. takes listeners on a journey, sharing a mixture of traditional Mikmaw songs and taking us to present day powwow songs. His concert starts with some of the oldest Mikmaw songs that are still known, these songs have survived hundreds of years. He will also perform Kojua songs which are social dance songs played with a Jikmaqn, which is a traditional rattle made of split ash. Lastly Michael sings contemporary powwow music that he has written for his group the Stoney Bear Singers. Tune in this Saturday at 7:30 pm to hear Michaels concert on YouTube and Facebook.

Musique Royales 35th Summer Festival continues, next week features Mikmaw singer Michael R. Denny at Government House in Halifax. Michael R. Denny is Mikmaw from the Eskasoni Mikmaw Nation, in Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Michael shares Mikmaw songs from hundreds of years ago up until present day, and describes the history of this music in both languages. A father, husband and renown traditional singer, Michael R. Denny has traveled and shared his music all over At...lantic Canada and beyond. In 2016, Mike released his debut album Traditionally Yours: Mikmaq Drums, Young and Old, which was the first of its kind! Michael R sings traditional Mikmaw songs and composes Mikmaw powwow songs for his powwow drum group, Stoney Bear Singers. He is passionate about Mikmaw songs, dances and language, and their revival.
