Brian Markham is inspired by the rugged forests and natural beauty of Muskoka. Brian’s woodturning transforms bark-covered burls into one-of-a-kind live-edge functional art. The character, imperfections, bark inclusions and detailed figuring are all visible in the finished platter, bowl or table. Brian believes that the art in your home tells a story about you and what you value and love. An appreciation of hand crafted burl art speaks of your connection to nature and the art...istic process. To learn more about Brian and his amazing creations head to our website (https://muskokaartsandcrafts.com//brian-markham-limberlos/) or follow him on Facebook @BrianMarkhamLimberlostWoodturning #MuskokaArtsandCrafts #muskoka #limberlost #huntsville

Muskoka has a rich artistic legacy. It is home to one of Ontario’s oldest annual outdoor art shows, Canada’s first studio tour and a century old heritage theatre. On April 28, 2008, following a recommendation by Muskoka Arts & Crafts, the District Municipality of Muskoka declared Muskoka a Designated Arts Community. Today, The arts designation recognizes the importance of the arts community in Muskoka and the artistic future for Muskoka shines brightly as each generation ad...ds its creativity, imagination and vision. Although Muskoka Arts & Crafts spearheaded the designation and the creation of the logo, it has always been our intent that the logo remain in the public domain without any one person or group owning the rights to its use. It’s now up to all of us, the people who run studios, organizations and businesses in Muskoka to make the most of this arts designation. To learn more and access the logo please head to or website https://muskokaartsandcrafts.com/designated-arts-community/ #MuskokaArtsandCrafts #muskoka #huntsville #bracebridge #muskokalakes #gravenhurst #lakeofbays #georgianbaytownship

Interesting Art Facts In 2016, a figure for a sculpture for the Mad Hatter’s tea party found the character of Alice, from Lewis Carroll’s children’s tale, Alice in Wonderland, tumbling down the throat of the renowned micro-sculptor, Willard Wigan, when he accidently inhaled the tiny figure. Mishaps are an ever-present risk for the British sculptor. At Willard’s scale, even his own heartbeat is a risk to his creations, which led the artist to develop a meditative technique to... reduce his heart rate so that he could sculpt between beats. To make his microscopic sculptures that are placed inside the eye of a needle, on the head of pin or on an eyelash and can only be seen through a microscope, Willard makes his own tools that he crafts from sharpened pins with razor edges for cutting and a set of micro tweezers made from a pair of his own eyelashes. He hand-sculpts the world’s smallest figures, that are measured in a few microns (one millionth of a meter), out of grains of sand, granules of sugar, gold, dust fibres. Willard traces his miniature art to humiliation in childhood when he, then an undiagnosed dyslexic, was routinely shamed, ridiculed and paraded around by a primary school teacher. He was labeled a failure for his poor academic work and made to feel small. He was encouraged and inspired by his mother to create tiny sculptures. Eventually his work got attention from the media, art and science worlds, collectors and people around the globe. Some of Willard's biggest admirers include British tennis player and entrepreneur David Lloyd, Sir Elton John, Prince Charles of Wales and many other celebrities. In 2007, he was awarded an MBE (Member of the British Empire) in recognition for his services to the arts. His work has been acknowledged by the international Technology, Entertainment and Design Institute. In 2018 Willard received an honorary doctorate from the University of Warwick in recognition of the significant contributions that he has made to art and sculpture. "One should never underestimate things you cannot see because that doesn't mean they don't exist. I cannot read but I found something else that was bigger and better. I guess my work is an inspiration for others to live to his or her fullest potential,'' Willard said in an interview. "Sometimes, the smallest things can make the biggest impact.'' Live your life, explore new horizons, and go for new adventures. May this year bring new happiness, new goals, new achievements and many new inspirations. Sweden’s former prime minister, Hans Göran Persson, once commented: Let our New Year's resolution be this: we will be there for one another as fellow members of humanity, in the finest sense of the word. There’s A Day for This Copyright Law Day Let’s face it: copyright law doesn’t seem to be the most exciting thing to talk about. But it is much more necessary than some of us may realize: without it, we’d end up fighting and squabbling over who owns what, what constitutes fair usage and spend all our time trying to defend our ideas and intellectual property. There are people who worked really hard to create all of things we enjoy in life, from the art we look at, music we li...Continue reading

In 1985, Muskoka Arts & Crafts established its Permanent Collection to represent those works of art that document the artistic excellence and diversity of the organization’s membership. It is housed at the Chapel Gallery. In 1989, this stoneware casserole dish by Mieke Martin-Soontiens was acquired. Mieke discovered pottery by chance. In the summer of 1978, she and her husband moved from Nova Scotia to Gravenhurst, Ontario. It was a huge life altering change for Mieke who,... after 20 years working for the same company, was ready for a new beginning. With open mind, I arrived at Georgian College in Barrie, recalls Mieke. Walking into the ceramic department was like a home coming. I returned the following day and stayed for three years. It is difficult to say why we do things. I feel I’ve committed myself to clay forever, it is the fascination to make something from the most common material in the world. You dig it from the ground and creating is limitless. The other fascination for Mieke is the continual learning process. It is always new; it is always different. I will struggle with disappointments and enjoy successes. After more than four decades working with clay, the Dutch-born artist still sees herself as a student. Mieke believes in developing an infallible technique, then allowing inspiration to complete the process of creation. Inspiration comes from her world-wide treks. Mieke adds texture and patterns to her work using sgraffito, a method by which designs are incised through the clay’s surface. Mieke works in stoneware and porcelain that is thrown on the wheel or hand build and sometimes a combination of the two. The firing is done in a gas kiln in a reduction atmosphere. In 1997, Mieke was made an honorary lifetime member in the organization. She returned to Nova Scotia in the late 1990s. Photo Credit: @ScottTurnbull #MuskokaArtsAndCrafts #MACPermanentCollection

Muskoka Arts & Crafts would like to wholeheartedly thank Mendelson Joe for his creative and generous donation of his paint spattered studio boots to raise funds for our not-for-profit organization. His boots have been purchased by a long-time admirer of Mr. Joe who will appreciate and enjoy this new acquisition. Every time Mr. Joe paints, he makes a mess all over his clothes and inevitably his boots. That’s how they got painted, said Mr. Joe about his colourful boots. I’ve... had them for about four or five years and the only reason I’ve retired them is because they are heavy boots and they’ve become too heavy for this old man to easily move around in. Mr. Joe donated his boots to Muskoka Arts & Crafts because, while he was living in Toronto, he had an exhibition at the Chapel Gallery in the early 1990s. I felt lucky to have a solo exhibition at the Chapel Gallery and I believe in reciprocity and charity. It’s how I choose to live and why I wanted to donate my paint-laden boots as a fund-raiser for Muskoka Arts & Crafts. @MendelsonJoe https://twitter.com/mendelsonjoe www.karenrobinsongallery.com/ #MuskokaArtsAndCrafts
