Muslim Council of Greater Hamilton is shocked and appalled by the recent actions of a Peel Officer who shot Ejaz Choudry, when responding to a call of an individual in state of mental distress. Our police services are meant to serve & protect its citizens, but it is evident in this scenario that this was not the priority here. Furthermore, this is another example where the police services have been trained to use force rather than to handle situations such as these with the ...rigour and class expected by the community. Police service budgets should be re-allocated to support other services, e.g. mental health support, affordable housing and healthcare, as the amount of funds to maintain status-quo in police services is not acceptable. We join in the call by NCCM (National Council of Canadian Muslims), and the MCP - Muslim Council of Peel that the officer in question be removed from the police force. While we await the results of the SIU investigation, we have little faith in the outcomes of such an investigation and echo the calls by the MCP on a public inquiry on this matter to ensure an impartial review of the matter. We request all community members to sign the following petition: https://www.nccm.ca/justiceforejaz/

This past week has been devastating as once again we see individuals from the Black community persecuted and their basic human and civil rights trampled. This is not an issue that is isolated within the United States. Discrimination continues to occur much closer to home in Canada, and even closer: Hamilton. It is important for all to acknowledge the continuing plight of our Black brothers and sisters, and how they continue to have their basic rights violated - their right to... dignity and lives free from persecution and discrimination in every facet of life. One of our fundamental teachings within Islam is the one shared by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) during his last sermon: "All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also, a white has no superiority over a Black nor a Black has any superiority over a white except by piety and good action". This is a teaching within Islam, but we acknowledge that, as Muslims, there is considerable work to ensure we actually live by this teaching. Racism against our Black brothers and sisters continues to exist within our communities. We must do better. We must dedicate time to listen and learn from our Black brothers and sisters. The Masajids (Mosques) in Hamilton are actively looking at ways to enable action and not just simply share these words. We welcome feedback and action ideas. While as a community we consider short and long-term actions to support our Black brother and sisters in a meaningful way, we ask that as individuals and families, we take this time to reflect upon our own perspectives and biases that have been internalized for generations. It is time that can be spent learning about the ongoing challenges and experiences. On #BlackOutTuesday, please take this time to reflect, learn, share and unlearn so we can be informed allies and take accountability of our actions, and responsibility of our inaction.
