"Nature literally has the power to heal."

Words matter. If you’re experiencing a strong emotion, take a moment to consider what to call it. But don’t stop there: once you’ve identified it, try to come ...up with two more words that describe how you are feeling. You might be surprised at the breadth of your emotionsor that you’ve unearthed a deeper emotion buried beneath the more obvious one. For anyone asking how to download the umbrella graphics, I've made them available for free here: https://susan-david.ck.page/umbrellas

Feelings such as helplessness may be present for the loved ones of those struggling. We're sharing with you some ideas that may seem like common knowledge but can go a long way for those who are in distress. Did you know that July is Minority Mental Health Awareness Month in the USA? Since Muslim Family Services of Ottawa has a diverse clientele and offers culturally responsive mental health counselling, we thought it would be important to highlight this month even though we are based in Canada. In Canada - Past research has suggested that Black, Asian, and other racialized community members are less likely to report mental distress including suicidal thoughts, depressive episod...es and use of mental health services (Chiu et al., 2018). - However, these same communities are more likely to report poorer self-related mental health and a weaker sense of community belonging, which has been associated with higher levels of depression and poorer mental health (Chiu et al., 2018). What does this show us? This shows that - 1. There is an increased stigma of mental health in minority communities (Chiu et al., 2018). - 2. Immigration and the lived experience of being a minority in Canada poses challenges that can affect mental health (Chiu et al., 2018). It is important that we normalize poor mental health, in the same way, we have normalized physical illnesses. It is also equally important that we work together as a community to normalize the use of mental health servicesin the same way, we normalize physical health care services! #mentalhealth #ottawatherapy

Our inner critic voice is not a voice that we were born with. It is a voice that we internalized/picked up from those around us that were highly critical. It's important that we don't believe everything we think and that we are aware of what our inner voice is telling us. Not only do our thoughts affect our emotions, but also our actions through behaviour. Practicing self-compassion always begins with self-awareness.... #selfcompassion #innercritic #mentalhealth

Did you know that Muslim Family Services of Ottawa has a thriving research and education department? One of the projects we worked on, along with our partners over at Crime Prevention Ottawa, was researching the role of weapons-carrying among youth. Our hard-working researchers along with our wonderful partners at CPO found very interesting results from this study that you can read more on here: https://www.crimepreventionottawa.ca//Perspectives-on-Weap... You can also watch a very informative and insightful discussion that took place, shared below. This discussion focused on the topic of how racism can influence weapons carrying among youth. with: Crime Prevention Ottawa/Prévention du Crime Ottawa #ottawaresearch #mentalhealthresearch #ottawatherapy #ottawacounselling #crimepreventionottawa
