Muveddet Al-Katib Art 10.07.2021

Traditional Eastern Miniature Artwork was considered the newspaper of the day, depicting important events and happenings and landmarks in the community through vibrant colours and illustration. Once Upon a Time In Saskatoon is a painting done in this style with a modern interpretation, depicting the many landmarks and sites in Saskatoon using the traditional techniques and materials.

So happy to have worked with Kevin Wesaquate , NYEP, all of my students on this exciting project funded by SK Arts and SIEC. Such a rewarding project creating this mural and telling the cultural stories of the students through art. And being selected for the Best Overall Poster in the City of Saskatoon Living in Harmony awards makes it even more special.

I am so pleased to be part of the City of Saskatoon Living in Harmony Award for with my wonderful students and everyone at Newcomers Youth Engagement Program (NYEP). I just finished an Artist in Community project funded by Sk Art and SIEC where I was the lead artist, working with the students and Kevin Wesaquate, to create mural called "Cultural Roots" to help the students connect their own cultural symbols with their new community and share their stories as newcomers to Sask...atoon. For those of you who don't know, The Living in Harmony Awards are awarded annually by the City of Saskatoon and recognize outstanding achievements contributing to the elimination of racial discrimination. They are part of the City’s commitment to foster an inclusive community where ethnocultural diversity is welcomed and valued, and where everyone can live with dignity and pursue their full potential, without facing racism or discrimination. This mural was selected Best Overall Poster by the Living in Harmony Award. With Covid this year, the City was unable to do an award ceremony as they have done in past years to recognize the awards recipients, however they did a fantastic job on a video presentation. Congratulations to all the great students in the program, Kevin, NYEP and thank you to the City of Sasaktoon for this recognition. https://youtu.be/QP4hgzbwa_M For more about the Living in Harmony Awards, you can visithttps://www.saskatoon.ca/community-culture-heritage/cultural-diversity/living-harmony

Thank you so much to TATFFI to inviting me to speak with a great group of young and driven women in the I-Can program. It was great to share my journey as an immigrant woman artist with this group and hear their inspiring stories as well. Thank you to Nidhi for organizing this Zoom call.
