November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month! Sometimes we take our lungs for granted. They keep us alive and well and for the most part, we don't need to think about them. That's why it is important to prioritize your lung health. Your body has a natural defense system designed to protect the lungs, keeping dirt and germs at bay. But there are some important things you can do to reduce your risk of lung disease.... A cold or other respiratory infection can sometimes become very serious. There are several things you can do to protect yourself: Wash your hands often with soap and water. Alcohol-based cleaners are a good substitute if you cannot wash. Avoids crowds during the cold and flu season. Good oral hygiene can protect you from the germs in your mouth leading to infections. Brush your teeth at least twice daily and see your dentist at least every six months. Get vaccinated every year against influenza. Talk to your healthcare provider to find out if the pneumonia vaccine is right for you. If you get sick, keep it to yourself! Protect the people around you, including your loved ones, by keeping your distance. Stay home from work or school until you're feeling better.

iTero in Orthodontics The iTero scanner is all about patient comfort. It delivers a digital impression that is much more accurate than a routine dental impression. The iTero scanner does not expose our patients to any sort of radiation and is completely safe. The best part is that the iTero scanner is fast and accurate. The iTero scanner digitally captures the structure of the teeth and gums using the latest optical technology. The scanner is a compact, hand-held wand. Once ...your orthodontist begins the scanning process, it can be stopped and started as many times as necessary. Your mouth is scanned with a radiation-free laser, and in as little as two to three minutes, the laser renders a digitally perfect, 3D impression of your teeth and soft tissue structures. Our professional team use this advanced piece of technology that makes patient care more efficient, more comfortable, and more precise.

Every year, on 1 December, the world commemorates World AIDS Day. People around the world unite to show support for people living with and affected by HIV and to remember those who lost their lives to AIDS. In 2020, the world’s attention has been focused by the COVID-19 pandemic on health and how pandemics affect lives and livelihoods. COVID-19 is showing once again how health is interlinked with other critical issues, such as reducing inequality, human rights, gender equality, social protection and economic growth. With this in mind, this year the theme of World AIDS Day is Global solidarity, shared responsibility.

Observed annually on 17 September, the World Patient Safety Day recognizes patient safety as a global health priority and underlines the need to ensure the safety of patients while receiving care. The Day also brings together patients, families, caregivers, communities, health workers, health care leaders and policy-makers to show their commitment to patient safety. As patient safety is always our priority, this year, due to #covid_19 pandemic the day is being commemorated under the theme, Health Worker Safety: A Priority for Patient Safety.

Brushing teeth with braces isn’t too different than brushing without braces. It’s still important to brush twice a day for at least two minutes, and if possible brush after every meal to remove loose food from under brackets and wires. If brushing isn’t an option immediately after a meal, then rinse your mouth out with water to help remove larger food particles. Use a soft bristle toothbrush or electric toothbrush and brush gently for two full minutes. Brush gently so you don’t damage the brackets or wires. You should replace your toothbrush every 3 months, or sooner if the brackets seem to make bristles wear down faster than usual. Remember to brush around all parts of the teeth, including the fronts, sides, backs, and chewing surfaces.

Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope. It is a tool for daily life in modern society. It is a bulwark against poverty, and a building block of development, an essential complement to investments in roads, dams, clinics and factories. Literacy is a platform for democratization, and a vehicle for the promotion of cultural and national identity. Especially for girls and women, it is an agent of family health and nutrition. For everyone, everywhere, literacy is, along with education in general, a basic human right.... Literacy is, finally, the road to human progress and the means through which every man, woman and child can realize his or her full potential.

Some tips for ORTHODONTIC RETAINERS The retainers may feel awkward at first and make speaking clearly a little difficult. Keep speaking and after a few days you will sound normal again. Remember... Retainers should be worn full time for 12 months. After the first year, you will move to nighttime wear and then gradually decrease wear over time. Remove your retainers for eating and brushing. The retainer case is the best place to keep your retainers when you are eating. Keep retainers away from pets they love to chew on them! Do not wear your retainer during contact sports, instead wear a mouth guard. Do not attempt to remove retainers hands free with tongue or cheek pressure as this can also distort the retainers.

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a genetic disorder that causes many fluid-filled cysts to grow in your kidneys. Unlike the usually harmless simple kidney cysts that can form in the kidneys later in life, PKD cysts can change the shape of your kidneys, including making them much larger. Diabetes and high blood pressure are the most common risk factors for kidney disease. However, obesity, smoking, genetics, gender, and age can also increase the risk. When the kidneys arent... working properly, waste builds up in the blood, including waste products from food. Therefore, its necessary for people with kidney disease to follow a special diet. Here are 20 of the best foods for people with kidney disease. 1. Cauliflower 2. Blueberries 3. Sea bass 4. Red grapes 5. Egg whites 6. Garlic 7. Buckwheat 8. live oil 9. Bulgur 10. Cabbage 11. Skinless chicken 12. Bell peppers 13. Onions 14. Turnips

WHAT IS A TWIN BLOCK? Orthodontic twin block is an appliance that moves the lower jaw into a more forward position, encouraging growth and a better fit of the upper and lower teeth. The twin block is only effective with full time wear. THINGS TO REMEMBER:... Wear the twin block full time includingwhen eating. (Start with soft foods like yogurt, oatmeal, etc. and work up to harder foods. You can also start with trying to eat with the twin block one meal a day and work up to all meals) Keep your twin block away from pets they love to chew on them! Brush your twin block after every meal with a bit of toothpaste and a toothbrush, since you will be eating with it in. NEVER use hot or boiling water,t can warp or melt the twin block. You can also soak the twin block in a diluted mouthwash solution for 10 minutes to keep it fresh. If you get white mineral deposits on your twin block soak it in a 1/2 water and 1/2 vinegar solution before brushing. You can also soak it in denture or retainer cleaner tablets (available at the drug store). Muscle fatigue or tenderness is normal the first few days of wearing your twin block.

Alzheimer is a complex disease with multiple risk factors. Some, like your age and genetics, are outside your control. However, there are seven pillars for a brain-healthy lifestyle that are within your control: Regular exercise Social engagement Healthy diet Mental stimulation... Quality sleep Stress management Vascular health Experts now believe that the risk of Alzheimers is not limited to old age, but in fact can start in the brain long before symptoms are detected, often in middle age. That means that its never too early to start taking care of your brain health. The more you strengthen each of the seven pillars in your daily life, the longerand strongeryour brain will stay working and the more likely youll be able to reduce your risk of developing Alzheimers or another dementia.

Surgical orthodontics can help with the following conditions: Bad bites Jaw bone abnormalities Malocclusion or the abnormal alignment of the upper and lower teeth... Sometimes, conventional orthodontic treatments such as braces, headgear, or retainers aren't enough to fix jaw and teeth issues. In these cases, surgical orthodontic care is needed. Performed in conjunction with non-surgical orthodontic treatment, surgical orthodontics can correct these problems and improve the overall appearance of the facial profile. Since each case in unique, each surgical procedure and recovery will differ from patient to patient. The best candidates for surgical orthodontics are adults whose jaw and teeth cannot be treated solely by traditional orthodontic options like braces and Invisalign. Generally, surgical orthodontics is performed only on adults whose jawbones are no longer growing. Adults with severe cases of improper bites and those with facial appearance concerns can be considered for this surgery.

At What Age Should One Become Concerned About Thumb/Finger Sucking Habits? Thumb/finger sucking and other nonnutritive sucking habits represent a developmental delay if prolonged beyond four or five years of age. The three factors (intensity, duration, frequency) have to be considered in determining the degree of concern. If the sucking act is excessive, the sooner the problem is identified and addressed the better! During a child's growth and development years, the structure has a remarkable ability to physiologically "rebound!" Whereas some parts of the thumb/finger-Induced structural problems may still require orthodontic attention, certain structural components may be minimized by early cessation of these habits.

From 2-5 years of age, children are growing most rapidly and can show signs of an incorrect bite and misaligned first teeth. Research shows that these early problems continue in the following stages of development and cause orthodontic problems to become more prominent as the permanent teeth develop. Habits such as thumb sucking, prolonged pacifier use, tongue thrusting and mouth breathing (known as poor myofunctional habits) cause the jaws to incorrectly develop and the te...eth to become crowded. These habits can be corrected to prevent the requirement for complex orthodontic treatment when the permanent teeth are all present at ages 12-14 years. Glioblastoma is the most common and aggressive primary brain tumor in adults. Heres the truth about five glioblastoma myths we commonly hear; 1. Myth: Cell phones cause glioblastoma.... Fact: To date, there is no established link that cell phones cause glioblastoma. Several different studies have failed to find clear evidence of a link between cell phone use and brain cancer. 2. Myth: Theres nothing you can do for an inoperable glioblastoma. Fact: A tumor thats considered inoperable at a hospital without specialized brain tumor programs may actually be operable if you seek treatment at a cancer center with the right expertise. 3. Myth: The ketogenic diet can cure glioblastoma. Fact: No diet can cure glioblastoma. A handful of case studies and internet bloggers have claimed the keto diet may have benefits for brain cancer patients, but the idea that you can starve glioblastoma through diet is a myth. 4. Myth: Having glioblastoma means your family is at increased risk for developing a brain tumor. Fact: Glioblastoma is a brain tumor that almost always develops sporadically. Being diagnosed with glioblastoma does not mean your children or siblings are more likely to develop glioblastoma or another brain tumor. 5. Myth: Chemotherapy always makes your hair fall out. Fact: The most commonly used chemotherapy for glioblastoma is called temozolomide (TMZ), and hair loss isnt typically one of the side effects of this chemotherapy. However, treating glioblastoma with radiation therapy to the brain can cause hair loss around the part of the head where the radiation beam enters. After radiation is complete, the hair almost always grows back. Join us on July 22 as we come together to Honor, Act, Learn and Give in support of the patients, families, and caregivers who have faced GBM.
