Meet Sasha Monteiro, #CCNM student research assistant. She is a third-year student at CCNM, with a passion for student advocacy, scientific research and philanthropy. "I hold a BSc. in Biomedical Science and a MSc. in Human Health and Nutritional Sciences from the University of Guelph. I have engaged in scientific research through the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, where I worked to standardize diagnostic criteria for myofascial pain across health-care professionals. I ha...ve published work in the medical journal, Pain Practice and was the successful recipient of the Biomedical Science Research Award of Merit and the Student Innovation Fund. In addition, I am passionate about advancing the understanding of a holistic approach, in the area of mindfulness and well-being and I am eager to promote this research at CCNM." -Sasha Monteiro If you're interested in participating in research at CCNM, you can email Sasha at [email protected]. "Hello! My name is Charlene Dawson, and I’m a Senior Student Services Officer at CCNM but I started almost 19 years ago as a receptionist in the Robert Schad Naturopathic Clinic. I felt it was a good fit for me because when I was a kid, my mom was very passionate about natural medicine and holistic health. My childhood asthma was treated with herbs and the assistance of a holistic practitioner and chiropractor because mom knew there had to be a more natural remedy than my puf...fer. When I started at the clinic, I began to recognize some of the treatments, herb names and tincture ingredients from what I had heard from my mom. Then I noticed patients at the reception desk hugging their interns and even crying happy tears on their way out. This encouraged me to see an intern myself. When I did have my first appointment, I realized the intern actively listened to me and was genuinely interested in helping me feel better. They worked with me. Until that point, no other doctor had heard me when I shared my interpretation of the innate wisdom - the inner voice - of my own body. Naturopathic doctors recognize how important this listening is in a person’s healing and with their extensive knowledge and diagnostic skills; they help the patient reach their optimum health together. When I started working at CCNM all those years ago, I was a completely different person. I was a shy, obese, extremely depressed, overall unhealthy person in pain and taking smoke breaks as often as was allowed. Over my time at the College, I quit smoking and because I was feeling better, I was able to take steps to be more active and thrive. I started belly dancing (in my 30s!) and in 2011, I was hired as a teacher in the studio where I took lessons. I started to travel on my own (totally recommend it at least once in your life), studied yoga, did a yoga teacher training course and began Dabke dancing with my (now) beloved. Since January 2020, I have been a vegan and between that and travelling, dance, yoga, therapy and my naturopathic doctor I found a contentment and peace that I never knew I could have. I wish it for you too. With great gratitude to the inner teacher - the part of me and the part of you that always knows the right way to go. Namaste." -Charlene Dawson #HumansofCCNM

A few years ago, when second-year student Amanda was an undergrad studying away from home and family, she quickly realized the vital importance of both asking for and offering help. This is a huge reason why the Queens, New York native was driven to become an ND empowering others facilitates healing, for both doctor and patient. Last summer, as the calls for racial justice grew louder across the world, CCNM's IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Advocacy) Committee provi...ded a space for conversation and support. There, Amanda felt heard and seen, and shortly after joined their communications working group. The conversations around these issues are challenging, but Amanda believes that the only way to be aware of inequities and disparities is by naming them and then taking action to address them. As a profession who seeks to help people heal, it is our responsibility to be aware of the ways that people are prevented from healing and how we can bridge those gaps." -Amanda Garcia #StudentSpotlight #NatMedWeek #CCNMlife

Thanks to everyone who recently supported the Mubina Jiwa Memorial Scholarship fund. Despite COVID-19 restrictions and the inability to hold an in-person event this year, we were able to raise over $6,000! This reflects the generosity of our community and honours the memory of a beloved colleague. Thanks to Mubina’s family, friends, colleagues and our #CCNM community, our newest recipient, Heather Asbury, will get support during an extremely stressful year. To have been awar...ded the Mubina Jiwa Scholarship is perhaps one of the greatest privileges I have experienced during my time at CCNM thus far. I am incredibly thankful to the donors of this scholarship for supporting the next generation of naturopathic doctors like myself through your contributions. Thank you also to Dr. Hirji and Dr. Sparrow for sharing your memories of Dr. Jiwa with me, and for organizing this scholarship in memory of your dear friend. It truly is an immense honour to be awarded this scholarship as I hope to embody and follow in the footsteps of Dr. Mubina Jiwa, ND well." -Heather Asbury #NatMedWeek

"My interest for naturopathic medicine stemmed from when I was working in addictions and mental health at my local hospital, and truly got to experience what Treating the Whole Person meant; I always wanted to be a doctor, but the type of doctor I wanted to be had changed. Before second year was about to begin my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 endometrial cancer. The team of physicians felt confident that surgery and a combination of radiation and chemotherapy could still c...ure it, and with positivity and determination she could fight and win. By the end of that week, her symptoms progressed and additional tests were ordered. Turns out her cancer had metastasized to the point where treatment was no longer an option; the doctors were giving my mom two months to live. The whirlwind of emotions that goes through your body and mind at that time is something I can never fully explain. I was supposed to be leaving in a few weeks to start my second year at CCNM, but how could I leave my family based on the information I had just received? I decided to take a year off school, to spend as much quality time as was possible with my mom and to provide support for my dad as we navigated this next chapter. Despite putting up the fight of her life, my mom passed away two months later. Before she passed, she made me promise her that I would use her story as fuel to complete my studies and use compassion to embrace being an empathetic practitioner for my future patients. As painful as it was grieving the loss of my mom, I returned to CCNM the following year with a passion I didn’t know existed. As I am beginning my third year of naturopathic medicine I have selected electives in both fertility and oncology, with hopes of focusing in integrative oncofertility care. I am a true believer that our experiences shape us, and that although we cannot always control what happens to us, we can control how we respond to it; to let ourselves feel pain, but to open ourselves to healing, finding freedom and for myself, using it to grow both as a person and a future health-care provider." - Lauryn Dingwall, Third-year student at CCNM #HumansofCCNM See more
