What does it mean to you to be happy? How do you think it's achieved? I saw a TV show a while back where they did an in-depth report on happiness ... about some of the things that make people happy, or unhappy and how that could change. Assuming that our physical needs are taken care of, they discovered several things that made people more happy than others. A strong faith. More personal power over our circumstances. Being an optimist rather than a pessimist. Good, solid, str...ong relationships. One of their experts made a really interesting statement to me. If you gave him two people, one who just won 10 million dollars in a lottery and one who didn’t, he said that he didn’t have enough data to predict who would be the happiest in one year’s time. Yet, we often hinge our happiness on the pursuit of wealth or things. Yet it is being scientifically proven that this is a misguided pursuit. This has been a solid truth of the Bible for thousands of years. God the Holy Spirit is so good to us and he'll inspire this Scripture section to your heart and life. It's from Psalm 25:11-14, "For the honor of your name, O Lord, forgive my many, many sins. Who are those who fear the Lord? He will show them the path they should choose. They will live in prosperity, and their children will inherit the land. The Lord is a friend to those who fear him. He teaches them his covenant." God is so, so good and you can be confident he'll never leave nor forsake you. God bless you.

I think it's a truism that most of us want to be successful in whatever we do. Parents want to raise kids that are well mannered, bright and kind. Business people go into business to make money, and to build something that is of worth. People will go to school and work hard to prepare for a Profession. There have been many books, seminars, TED talks and podcasts to teach us about how to be successful in business, in love, or just about everything. But for Christians, we ought... to desire "success" in our followership of Jesus. The truth is, we're not "born with" characteristics that lead to being a successful Christian. Our lives are the product of the patience and conscious effort we put out working with the grace of God. The Holy Spirit has something he wants you to know and he'll speak to your heart as you meditate on the Scripture section. It's from Psalm 25:4-7, "Show me the right path, O Lord; point out the road for me to follow. Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you. Remember, O Lord, your compassion and unfailing love, which you have shown from long ages past. Do not remember the rebellious sins of my youth. Remember me in the light of your unfailing love, for you are merciful, O Lord." Know that the merciful and grace-filled God of the Universe loves you. God bless you.

This is something that's been making its way around social media for the last day or two. It's attributed to Kurt Vonnegut, "When I was 15, I spent a month working on an archeological dig. I was talking to one of the archeologists one day during our lunch break and he asked those kinds of 'getting to know you' questions you ask young people: Do you play sports? What’s your favorite subject? And I told him, no I don’t play any sports. I do theater, I’m in choir, I play the vio...lin and piano, I used to take art classes. And he went "Wow! That’s amazing!" And I said, Oh no, but I’m not any good at ANY of them. And he said something then that I will never forget and which absolutely blew my mind because no one had ever said anything like it to me before: 'I don’t think being good at things is the point of doing them. I think you’ve got all these wonderful experiences with different skills, and that all teaches you things and makes you an interesting person, no matter how well you do them.' And that honestly changed my life. Because I went from a failure, someone who hadn’t been talented enough at anything to excel, to someone who did things because I enjoyed them. I had been raised in such an achievement-oriented environment, so inundated with the 'Myth of Talent,' that I thought it was only worth doing things if you could 'win' at them. God the Holy Spirit is with you and will inspire and apply the Scripture section to you. It's from Psalm 19:12-14, "How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart? Cleanse me from these hidden faults. Keep your servant from deliberate sins! Don’t let them control me. Then I will be free of guilt and innocent of great sin. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer." God knows you better than you know yourself and he is good. You can trust him. God bless you. See more

We don't get nearly as much snow in the Lower Mainland as they do east of us in the rest of Canada. There was a person driving through a snowstorm just outside of Regina, Saskatchewan. She was completely lost and was struggling under the hazardous weather conditions, so she was relieved when she found a snowplow and since she was lost, she decided to follow it. She got in behind the snowplow and kept as close to the machine as she could while it removed snow from the road. Af...ter some time, the snowplow stopped and the driver got out and came back to her car. Where are you going, ma'am? he asked. I’m on my way to Regina, she replied. The snowplow driver replied, Well, you’ll never get there following me! I’m plowing a parking lot! The Holy Spirit is always with you to give you "ears to hear" and a "heart to receive" what he wants you to hear from the Scripture section. It's from Psalm 19:9-11, "Reverence for the Lord is pure, lasting forever. The laws of the Lord are true; each one is fair. They are more desirable than gold, even the finest gold. They are sweeter than honey, even honey dripping from the comb. They are a warning to your servant, a great reward for those who obey them." Know that God's with you as you rest. God bless you. The pandemic is still affecting people more than is possible to report. When I'm writing this, I just heard an airplane fly overhead. When the lockdown began in March, one day I got out for a walk next to the Vancouver International Airport. In the two hours I was walking, I counted 5 planes in total either taking off or landing! It was eerie. It goes without saying that travel has been hugely impacted by the pandemic. It means that people who rely on the industry are hurting... as well as those who travel for business or pleasure. There are many other businesses affected by it as well. Invite God the Holy Spirit to speak to your heart through the Scripture section. It's from Psalm 19:7-8, "The instructions of the Lord are perfect, reviving the soul. The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The commandments of the Lord are right, bringing joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are clear, giving insight for living." May the grace of God guard you as you rest. God bless you.

God wants to have a relationship based on love and respect with you. He knows that no "pyrotechnic displays" of his power will achieve the response from you he desires. Power forces a response. Only love can summon a response of love. Love is the one thing God wants from us and it is the reason that he created us. Why does God content himself with the slow, unencouraging way of making righteousness grow within us rather than forcing it on us? Because that's the way love is. L...ove has its own power, the only power ultimately capable of conquering the human heart. And God is love. the Holy Spirit will do for you what is intended by the Scriptures, that is to apply them to your heart and life. It's from Exodus 34:5-7, "Then the Lord came down in a cloud and stood there with him; and he called out his own name, Yahweh. The Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out, 'Yahweh! The Lord! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But I do not excuse the guilty. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren; the entire family is affectedeven children in the third and fourth generations.' God is full of compassion and mercy and love toward you. God bless you.

The pandemic has challenged many people (maybe even yourself) to ask different questions than they may have asked before. For instance, here's one: How do you measure life? That is a question that we all answer in many different ways. For the super rich in this world, life is measured by the size of their net-worth or their influence. For others life is measured by celebrity, their talent, their skills, who their friends are. The thing of it is, the way you measure life will ...come out in your speech, in the things you do, where you spend your money, and the time you spend on things. I know God the Holy Spirit will speak and minister to your life as you read and meditate on this Scripture section. It's from Luke 12:13-15, "Then someone called from the crowd, 'Teacher, please tell my brother to divide our father’s estate with me.' Jesus replied, 'Friend, who made me a judge over you to decide such things as that?' Then he said, 'Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.' God knows you and what you need. God bless you.

When I attended grade school, each spring in phys-ed, we would do track and field. As a young kid, we’d set the high jump next to the sand pit and go over it doing the scissor jump over the bar. That was what our teacher taught us to do. When we got to "Junior High," the phys-ed equipment changed and we were taught a new jump called the Fosbury Flop named after the 1968 Olympic High Jump Champion, Dick Fosbury who invented and perfected it. We could do this new jump b...ecause we had a landing bag full of foam, not just the sand pit! The Fosbury Flop is the technique now universally used by the top High Jumpers in the world and the result is they have been able to jump higher than anyone in history. God sets the bar high for us in many different places in his word. Why? So we rely on him and not our own technique. The Holy Spirit is a work in your life applying the Scripture section where it's going to work. It's from Psalm 19:1-4, "The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. They speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard. Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world." May you experience the peace of God that passes understanding as you rest. God bless you.
