Although seeing yet another senseless act of violence committed by those that are meant to protect the public leaves us at a loss for words, silence is not an o...ption. We can all see that what was done to #JacobBlake was horrible and unjustifiable. No, it didn’t happen here, but that doesn’t excuse us from our own responsibility to fight against racism. Of course it’s easy to express outrage when we see something so deplorable shared on our television screens or social timelines, but there’s a difference between agreeing that something needs to change and pushing for it. Racism happens around all of us, even when we don’t realize it. That’s why anti-racism requires persistent self-awareness, constant criticism, and regular self-examination. Being a good person isn’t the prerequisite for wanting to do better; we can ALL do better when it comes to fighting inequity and racism in our daily lives, and we’ll all be better off for it. As we continue to stand in solidarity with the #BlackLivesMatter movement, our team has been meeting to discuss how we can show our support. In addition to a split $1000 donation to @BlackHealthCan and #BLM through the Parkdale Queen West Community Health Centre earlier this month, we’ve also directly contributed to the @GoFundMe pages for victims and their families. After this week’s meeting, our team is now reading #ThisBookIsAntiRacist and #HowToBeAnAntiRacist to further strengthen our understanding of this important issue, increase our awareness, and discuss how we can continue to combat racism daily. As the country rallies to #SupportLocal, we also encourage everyone to remain mindful of #BlackOwned businesses like @parkdalepetfoods and initiatives like @howshehustles in the community that you can support! #blacklivesmatter #blacklivesmattermovement @ Master Mechanic High Park
