* SOUND ON* This week we are featuring a beginners warm up. This is a great exercise to work on rounded fingers and avoid floating fingers. At a even tempo play these penta scales ascending and descending, focusing on proper technique. Try to be aware of feeling the keys under your fingertips at all times to encourage rounded fingers. A common question we always get asked is " How long should I practice?" We always say for beginners it is best to practice more often then focus on long sessions. Many students are guilty of practicing for hours the day before or day of their lesson. Sound familiar? Practicing everyday for 20 minutes is going to have a better result than 1 hour two times a week, or rushing before class to complete homework. More advanced players will benefit from longer practice sessions,... but even then, more often than a few times a week will always yield better results. Have you considered the way you sit while you play? The most common problem we have noticed since beginning online lessons, is that students position themselves way too close to the piano. Make sure to position your bench far enough back that your arms are straight and elbows bent. Sometimes the bench may be too high or too low.
