10-20 BRAIN SERIES - T3 | The area under T3 is known as the left temporal lobe. . . This area is primarily involved in hearing and auditory perception. It includes hearing and perceiving different frequencies, pitches, harmonics, tones, intensities, acoustic patterns, and volume. .... . Damage in this area can be subtle or obvious, depending on the extent of damage. For example, one may have troubles hearing following a concussion, but rather than being an issue with the brain, it could be a result of damage at T3 or T4 (the similar area but on the right side of the brain. . . #myosymmetries #1020brainseries . . #calgary #calgaryalberta #calgaryhealth #yyc #yycfitness #yycliving #yyctoday #yycconcussion #wellness #health #concussion #depressionshelp #anxiety #adhd #fibromyalgia #chronicpain #eeg #qeeg #braininjury #yycpsychologist #psychology #biofeedback #neurofeedback #depressionawareness #stigma #breakthestigma #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness See more

BRAIN-GUT-MICROBIOME AXIS | The link between the brain and the gut has been a popular topic lately in various research fields and in the media, but what does it mean? . . For decades, the medical field believed that the brain has an influence on the gut, and this influence only went in one direction. We have come to understand that the influence is bidirectional, meaning the gut also has a large influence on the brain's function! In addition, there is an ecosystem of gut mi...crobes that live within the gut, and play an important role in monitoring the body's systems. . . For example, a critical neurotransmitter (signaling chemical within the brain), Serotonin, is highly linked to anxiety and depression. In fact, a common type of anti-depression medication is based on altering serotonin, called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI). The link between the gut and the brain is evident in our recent understanding that about 95% of the body's serotonin is stored in the specialized cells within the gut. These cells are heavily impacted by what we eat, signals from the gut's microbiomes, and signals from the brain about emotional states. . . This interaction is being explored to better understand numerous disorders, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), affective disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis, obesity, and Chronic Pain. . . If you want to know more, send us a message, leave a comment, or give us a call! . . Information is derived from: Martin, C., R., Osadchiy, V., Kalani, A., & Mayer, E. A. (2018). 10-20 BRAIN SERIES - F8 | The area associated with F8 is called the right ventral (orbital) frontal cortex. This region is the last in our series for the frontal lobe. . . F8 is famously known for its control of emotions and mood, along with other functions. It has close ties to an area of the brain called the amygdala, which is deeper in the brain and provides emotional content to language, intonation, sound of voice, social emotion, guilt, shame, and the detection of em...otions in the self in others... so you could say it's important! . . F8 is also responsible for the conscious processing of facial recognition, and spatial and visual working memory. For example, it helps control active short term memory of sight, as if you were to remember directions after asking someone on the street. . . Damage to this region is often associated with a decrease socially acceptable emotional states. One may show withdrawn behaviour, have emotional spouts, be unable to determine emotional meanings in daily conversations, and much more. Facial processing may also be hindered, causing an individual to forget faces of people they know well, even though they know they should know the person. . . This area is also susceptible to damage, as it borders the nasal cavity at the front of the skull. This region has sharp bone that can cause micro-tearing in the brain if they collide from a blow to the head or sudden acceleration/deceleration. . . #myosymmetries #1020brainseries . . #calgary #calgaryalberta #calgaryhealth #yyc #yycfitness #yycliving #yyctoday #yycconcussion #wellness #health #concussion #depressionshelp #anxiety #adhd #fibromyalgia #chronicpain #eeg #qeeg #braininjury #yycpsychologist #psychology #biofeedback #neurofeedback #depressionawareness #stigma #breakthestigma #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness See more

10-20 BRAIN SERIES - F4 | The regions associated with F4 are at the most posterior (back) part of the frontal lobe on the right side. Although still responsible for executive functioning, F4 has some specific characteristics that are critical for daily life. . . This region is involved in metaphorical thinking, sustained attention, short-term memory retrieval of objects, negative emotions, vigilance and avoidance behaviour. It is also responsible for Gestalt, which is the ...ability to take small parts of information and situations, and add them up to be more than a collection of parts. For example, being able to make abstract inferences from different pieces of information that may or may not be related. . . Damage to this area often results in impaired social functioning. This is due to someone's inability to pay attention for long periods of time, and not picking up on common metaphors in daily conversation. These issues can easily be attributed to the person, but are actually side effects of damage to this region from various potential causes. . . #myosymmetries #1020brainseries . . #calgary #calgaryalberta #calgaryhealth #yyc #yycfitness #yycliving #yyctoday #yycconcussion #wellness #health #concussion #depressionshelp #anxiety #adhd #fibromyalgia #chronicpain #eeg #qeeg #braininjury #yycpsychologist #psychology #biofeedback #neurofeedback #depressionawareness #stigma #breakthestigma #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness See more

10-20 BRAIN SERIES - C4 | The final site that we look at in the motor strip is C4, which primarily controls movement on the left side of the body. . . In particular, C4 is involved with left hand movements. The number nerve connections in the hand is greater than most places in the body to be able to detect small movement and touch points. .... . Similar to Cz and C3, this region is heavily involved in the anticipation and understanding of actions. This includes actions we make ourselves, along with the actions of others that we observe. This allows us to watch someone carry out an action, then mirror it. . . #myosymmetries . . # calgary #calgaryalberta #calgaryhealth #yyc #yycfitness #yycliving #yyctoday #yycconcussion #wellness #health #concussion #depressionshelp #anxiety #adhd #fibromyalgia #chronicpain #eeg #qeeg #braininjury #yycpsychologist #psychology #biofeedback #neurofeedback #okotoks #okotoksliving #okotoksconcussions #okotoksbusiness #okotoksmoms #musclemovement See more

STRESS AND THE BRAIN | Stress can cause a number of different things in the body, but how does it impact your brain? Kendra Cherry from VeryWellMind (linked below) outlines a few! . . 1) Having chronic/prolonged stress increases the risk for mood and anxiety disorders. This could include depression or other emotional disorders that have a large impact on one's life. .... . 2) Stress can physically change the brain's structure. Note that there are different types of stress, and "good stress" does not have the same impact as chronic stress. There are two types of matter in the brain, grey and white. Chronic stress alters the balance between the two, and even changes the white matter itself. . . 3) Chronic stress can cause Apoptosis (cell death) in certain areas of the brain. The most notable region is in an area called the hippocampus that is critical for memory, emotions, and learning. . . 4) Stress can shrink areas of the brain associated with emotions, metabolism, and memory. It is believed that intense, traumatic stress causes this type of shrinkage, rather than everyday stress. . . 5) Different types of memory are also impaired. Spatial memory (remembering information about locations and objects in the environment), and memory retrieval (recalling information already stored in the brain) tend to be impacted the most. . . Navigating how to best lower your stress levels can be overwhelming. 10-20 BRAIN SERIES - CZ | The Central Strip (C3, CZ, and C4) incorporate brain regions associated with movement and somatosensory systems. . . Not only is this region responsible for controlling movements and senses such as feeling and touch, but CZ is involved in the sequencing of muscle movements for one's lower extremities. This is critical for actions such as walking, skipping, kicking a soccer ball, etc. .... . Damage to this area can occur from a hard impact on the tailbone. The impact can cause a shock up the spinal cord and drive the brain into the top of the skull, concussion this region. These types of concussions often go unnoticed, as the head is not hit directly. . . #myosymmetries . . #calgary #calgaryalberta #calgaryhealth #yyc #yycfitness #yycliving #yyctoday #yycconcussion #wellness #health #concussion #depressionshelp #anxiety #adhd #fibromyalgia #chronicpain #eeg #qeeg #braininjury #yycpsychologist #psychology #biofeedback #neurofeedback #depressionawareness #stigma #breakthestigma #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #motormovement See more

THOUGHTS | How many thoughts a day do you think you have? 100? 500? 1000? Canadian researchers in cognitive neuroscience estimate its over 6000! . . Thoughts were measured by looking at blood flow changes. This varies from older methods of relying on what people report. As self-report studies are being used less and less due to their low validity and reliability, cognitive neuroscientists are finding new ways to study the brain. .... . Thinking back on your day, how many of those 6000+ thoughts were productive? Or positive? Or produced good in the world? With so much going on in the world, we encourage you to think of three things you are grateful for! . . #myosymmetries . . #calgary #calgaryalberta #calgaryhealth #yyc #yycfitness #yycliving #yyctoday #yycconcussion #wellness #health #concussion #depressionshelp #anxiety #adhd #fibromyalgia #chronicpain #eeg #qeeg #braininjury #yycpsychologist #psychology #biofeedback #neurofeedback #depressionawareness #stigma #breakthestigma #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #positivepsychology See more

10-20 BRAIN SERIES - C3 | For the next few weeks, we will be looking at the "motor strip" for this series. This is an area of the brain associated with body movements and the sensory system. . . C3, although on the left side of the brain, controls movements on the right side of the body. This includes everything from the toes to yours facial muscles. .... . Not only is this region in charge of moving these muscles, but it also involved with feeling touch sensations and sequencing combinations of movements. It helps you anticipate and understand actions and movements. C3 in particular involves the lower extremities - your legs and feet. . . Problems can arise when this area is impacted by a brain injury/concussion, impacting one's balance or coordination. . . #myosymmetries #1020brainseries . . #calgary #calgaryalberta #calgaryhealth #yyc #yycfitness #yycliving #yyctoday #yycconcussion #wellness #health #concussion #depressionshelp #anxiety #adhd #fibromyalgia #chronicpain #eeg #qeeg #braininjury #yycpsychologist #psychology #biofeedback #neurofeedback #depressionawareness #stigma #breakthestigma #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness See more
