As this is my last day on the Saddle Ridge CA board, I thought I should make some mention of the fact that there may be a gap in "service" while a new editor is appointed. I've lived in Saddle Ridge since June of 2000, and been on the board since 2002. Over that time I've held all the executive positions except treasurer - thank goodness there was always someone more qualified for that position! I've been land use chairman since 2007, a real learning experience! I think my fa...vourite project has been organizing the annual community Clean Up, which wouldn't have been possible without the help of a whole lot of other volunteers! and yes, I've applied for a 2021 cleanup. I'm not leaving Saddle Ridge, just stepping back, and hoping new volunteers will make our community even better. Due to the enhanced Covid restrictions tonight's AGM will be virtual rather than in person. Watch this space for directions to join us! Judy See more

Today, we announced new measures to help slow spread of COVID-19, and we are declaring a public health emergency in Alberta. Let me be clear, we are not moving ...into a lockdown, but with targeted restrictions to help stop the spike and prevent our healthcare system from being overwhelmed. For the full details on today's announcement: https://www.alberta.ca/release.cfm The medical data shows the number one area of COVID-19 spread is large social gatherings. As a result, indoor social gatherings are no longer permitted. Outdoor social gatherings will be limited to 10 people, and that includes weddings and funerals (with no receptions). This measure is mandatory and will be enforced with fines. Places of worship will be restricted to 1/3 capacity, and will be encouraged to move celebrations online. As for businesses in the "enhanced" status in Alberta, we will have 3 categories of new measures: - Closed - Open, with restrictions - Open, by appointment only Businesses and services that will need to close include: banquet halls, conference centres, trade shows, auditoria, community centres, children's play centres and indoor playgrounds, all team and individual sports. Restaurants, pubs, bars, and lounges will be able to remain open, subject to restrictions: - Maximum of 6 people from the same household at one table - Liquor service open until 10 pm, in-person dining closes at 11 pm - Only eating/drinking permitted - no other entertainment/services Retail establishments will also be able to remain open, at 25% capacity. These include grocery, clothing, hardware, automotive, liquor, computer and technology stores, pharmacies, farmer's markets. Other services and venues are also open, but subject to 25% capacity. These include museums and galleries, libraries, movie theatres, indoor entertainment centres and indoor fitness centres. Some businesses services will move to appointment only, and many of these have already taken precautions to operate this way. These include personal services like haircare, esthetics, wellness services, professional services, taxi and rideshare, hotels/motels, and private lessons. Another important measure - the school calendar has been updated. For grades 7-12, at-home learning will begin starting November 30, until the Winter Break starts after December 18. For all students, in-class learning will resume on January 11. I know that many of these changes will be disruptive to businesses and to all Albertans. We believe these measures carefully balance protecting lives AND livelihoods. At the end of the day, this is about protecting our healthcare system, which is at risk from rising hospitalizations and ICU cases. This is about protecting our loved ones and ensuring that Albertans who need critical access to other healthcare services can get them. These measures will be reviewed in 3 weeks, and could be extended if needed. I want to thank all Albertans in advance for your understanding and what you have done personally to protect yourself and those around you. Together, I know we can stop the spike and protect each other.

It's been almost five months for those in NE Calgary and Ward 5 impacted by the June hailstorm. I brought forward a second motion to Council to provide additio...nal relief to Northeast residents who are struggling, through no fault of their own, to repair and replace their damaged property. It is unfortunate that Calgary City Council- the level of government with the least financial capacity - are the only ones willing to act in support of our Northeast communities. As elected officials in #yyc, we will not abdicate our responsibility to those in need. See attached motion. GeorgeChahal.ca/hailstorm

I think this should read "west" of 36th street. The changes are challenging, but it'll be worth it in the end. I was shocked at how little traffic there was dropping people off.

I'm not sure how much good reducing neighbourhood speed limits is going to do - those who choose to ignore the current limits aren't likely to suddenly start obeying lower limits. There's a limit to how much of their budget the police can afford to devote to enforcement. Here's an opportunity for you to be heard: Neighbourhood Speed Limit Review Neighbourhood speed limits in the City of Calgary have been reviewed. A report of the findings will be presented to the Transportation & Transit Committee today, September 30, at 9:30 am. Recommendations include changing the unposted speed limit from 50 km/h to 40 km/h within the city limits. You can find the report by clicking the above link. You can make a submission using the public submission form and can register to speak at committee by emailing [email protected].

Hey, #yyc! You’ve told us your concerns about noisy and unsafe vehicles, and we are listening! Throughout the month of September, you will see us on city street...s as part of our Safer Vehicles Initiative. We have a responsibility to ensure vehicles meet safety standards and comply with the Traffic Safety Act. We will be educating motorists and enforcing infractions when appropriate. Further to the safety aspect, we will also be focusing on nuisance equipment violations such as insufficient mufflers and unnecessary noise from vehicles. Unsafe vehicles on city streets put all drivers at risk. Help us as we work to make Calgary a safe place to be. How can you help? There are several things you can look for to ensure your vehicles are safe: - Is the tire tread sufficient? - Are cracks in the windshield affecting your visibility? - Are any parts falling off your vehicle? - Do all tail, head, and signal lights function properly? - Does your vehicle’s muffler emit excessive noise? - Are the windows beside and in front of the driver free of tint? - Do the seat belts work and do vehicle occupants wear them? Over the course of the first week of this initiative, our Traffic Unit members visited every quadrant of the city and spoke with many Calgarians. Most stops lasted less than two minutes, and drivers were asked to check that vehicle lights functioned while officers did a quick vehicle fitness check. One of the most worrisome things our officers noted was a vehicle running on extremely bald tires. This is dangerous because your tires are the only contact between the road and your vehicle. All turning, stopping, and starting depends on your tires. Bald tires increase your stopping distance, lower your ability to avoid emergencies and risk a ‘blow out,’ which could occur at high speed. Drivers face an $81 fine and vehicle registration suspension until the issue is resolved. By working together, we can clean up our streets, and ensure that vehicles and occupants are safe. Feel free to ask us any questions you may have about the Traffic Safety Act if you happen to see us out on city streets. Thanks, Calgary!
