Dr. Richard Stawick, the Chief Medical Health Officer for Island Health, speaks to media on Nov. 18, 2020. Now is the time to double down on our efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19. We have watched the rapid increase of COVID-19 cases and outbreaks on the Lower Mainland over the past weeks. Until recently, the number of positive cases throughout Island Health remained relatively low. This was not by luck. It was the result of hard work by people in communities across our r...Continue reading

2020 Cormorant Island Antibody Testing Summary Report - Final Key Messages (view more in full document on 'Namgis website. Link below) In March and April of 2020, Cormorant Island experienced a cluster of 30 COVID-19 infections, including one death.... Mayor of Alert Bay Dennis Buchanan and Elected Chief of 'Namgis First Nation Don Svanvik made a request to Island Health for COVID-19 antibody testing. The goal was to understand the true impact of COVID-19 on the community. COVID-19 antibody testing was provided in the Rec Centre between June 24 and June 27. Over 500 residents provided a blood sample and completed a short survey. 19 residents (3.7%) tested positive for COVID-19 antibodies, meaning that they were previously infected with the COVID-19 virus and their body made antibodies against the virus. When including those residents that did not participate, the total percent increases from 3.7% to 4.8%. Overall, spread of COVID-19 in the community was very limited. The community remains vulnerable to COVID-19. Continuing to follow public health advice is very important. Continue reading http://www.namgis.bc.ca/covid-19-antibody-testing-on-cormo/

‘Namgis Elk Draw 2020 Each year when ‘Namgis receives our allocated tags, we divide them, with one half for hunters and the other half for Food, Social, Ceremonial (FSC, commonly called ‘ceremonial’). The hunter tags are then put into our own lottery for ‘Namgis hunters who are eligible. Eligibility is determined based on our rules (see below). The FSC elk are currently all butchered and delivered to elders here at ‘Yalis. After all FSC elk are butchered; delivery will begin ...to elders in Alert Bay. All ceremonial elk is distributed as food; none is kept for social/ceremonial purposes. All First Nations elders in Alert Bay will be delivered elk meat regardless of registered nation. Management of this process is done by the Natural Resources Department. All hunters must fill out their tags and return them to the NRD after their successful hunt. If you are unsuccessful, the tag must be returned so it can be reported. ‘Namgis Elk Tag Hunter Eligibility The rules for eligibility are: 1. Must be a ‘Namgis member, with a valid status card 2. Must have a valid Canadian Firearms Licence (Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) 3. Must be 19 years of age 4. Must have not received a ‘Namgis elk tag within the past 3 years 5. One tag per household, per cycle 6. Hunter must be present during harvesting of the animal. Applications are available online at http://www.namgis.bc.ca/news-items/2020-elk-harvest/, or at the ‘Namgis Administration office. The application deadline is September 28th, 2020 at 4:00 pm.

This afternoon, Friday, July 31st, 2020, we will be delivering bar-b-que salmon to indigenous elder households on Cormorant Island. These are fish from last year, there are multiple species of salmon, and there wasn't enough for a normal distribution when they were caught, so we froze them waiting for an opportunity to distribute them. It was decided that we would cook these fish and deliver them to elders, that way we can divide the fish up evenly. If you receive a door ha...nger, then you weren't home when we arrived, please call the main office at 250-974-5556 and let them know you are now home and we will head back before the end of the day. Please be kind to our delivery staff, there are 103 elder households that we must deliver to across the entire island, they're doing the best they can to get this done. Have a great day!
