Power up Education- Is hosting a workshop Sat, Nov 28th Private Body Parts (Workshop #1) for children ages 2-8 with an adult. Sat, November 28, 2020 10:00 AM ... 11:00 AM PST $15 per family Why Do We Teach Kids About Their Bodies from a Young Age? Children gain control of their world by naming it. With each new word, the child grows in understanding and power. When all body parts can be named, including the private body parts, the child can talk about it, ask questions about it and understand its specialness. Teaching early allows children to feel good about their bodies and sets the foundation for the development of positive attitudes about sexuality. Children are information sponges. Learning about their bodies from trusted adults and elders allows children to avoid mythical information that they may hear from cousins and friends, the media and on the playground. Teaching early allows caregivers to pass on their family values, culture and traditions. When children injure their private body parts, they are more likely to ask for help from adults who have talked to them about these special parts. When children learn about their bodies, including the private body parts, they are more likely to come to us throughout the (pre) teen years. Even though it may be difficult to talk about the private parts of the body, it empowers the next generation to live healthier lives. For many families, the long sunny days between June and September offer lots of chances to reconnect and have fun together. While its great to plan special family outings like a trip to the beach, sometimes the simple, everyday activities you do with your children can make the best memories (and teach them important new skills). Here are 7 things to do with your child this summerto bond with them and boost their cognitive and social-emotional skills at the same time!

Feeling estranged from your own child is painful. Research indicates the most important predictor of a childs emotional and psychological stability is the clo...seness of the parent/child relationship. If your child is not opening up when they are upset, the relationship may not be as close as it needs to be. There are two habits that parents routinely engage in that shut down communication and drive a child away: negating feelings and mistaking sympathy for empathy. In many cases, honoring your childs feelings is all they need to feel better. Simply knowing their parent understands allows them to feel secure and forge ahead. Some sympathetic statements, on the other hand, disrupt any chance of emotional attunement, instead of helping them work through their difficult feelings. Dr. Erin Leonard discusses how to be a parent your child wants to confide in on the Gottman Relationship Blog: https://bit.ly/2DHZe8u

A mantra to tuck in your pocket: Behavior is communication. Listen. Ask questions. Look for the need driving the behavior. Respond gently. That includes paying... attention to and meeting your own needs, my friends. You matter, too. The trouble is that waiting for development to occur can be bothersome for us big people raising children in a fast-paced world. We try to hurry development alo...ng rather than championing it at every point along the way. But children are not small adults, and we cannot force them into adulthood. We must respect that children are growing a brain at the rate of billions of neural connections a day. That level of growth will need to continue for years before they have any natural ability to manage their impulses and make good choices with some semblance of consistency. - an excerpt from my latest book, Parenting Right From The Start. I think many of the little people attending Early Learning & Care programs experience this daily; especially when it is a new experience for them. We can provide the support they need by Honouring their message and remaining steady in the wake their emotions. This tells them, "I've got you" & "You are safe". We are all human beings and we all need to know these truths.
