The works of these two award-winning poets speak to the black experience of living in Canada. For the month of June, well be donating the proceeds of any titles by... these authors to organizations chosen by them. Sonnet has chosen Tillicum Lelum Aboriginal Friendship Centre, a local organization that strives to improve the quality of life for Aboriginal people living in an urban environment. Nanaimo Art Gallery is a space for learning and challenging established understandings. As events have unfolded in the last two weeks including the murder of George Floyd at the hands of police officers and other events that have shone another light on the effects of systematic anti-black racism, and sparked a global outcry, we have been reflecting on this, and the parallel and entwined histories and ongoing structures of racism in Canada. Like many of you, we have been liste...ning and thinking about and how we can do better. We know it is important to recognise not only the ongoing legacies of colonial violence and anti-black racism in Canada, but also how art institutions and museums have enacted racist policies and practices, and how these systems continue today. We are committed to continuing to make shifts in our organization, and our industry, to create and sustain a diverse and inclusive community where difficult conversations around racism and structures of inequality can be supported with critical care. This is an ongoing process considered in all aspects of our work, and we recognize that there is still a lot to do. Members of our staff who choose to attend the protest at Maffeo Sutton Park on Friday, June 5th are supported in their participation. BLACK LIVES MATTER
