NCC will remain open for practice and juniors Hello NCC Members, Happy New Year. I hope that everyone had a happy, safe, and healthy holiday season.... The Board of Directors and Manager met virtually Saturday night and discussed Thursday’s announcement from the Provincial Health Officer. All restrictions around adult team sports and gatherings have been extended until at least February 5. That means we are basically in the same position that we have been in since early December league play remains suspended. Some curling clubs have decided to shut for the season due to this and their specific financial or facility situation. Here at the Nanaimo Curling Centre, our finances are in a fairly good position. We have received and will continue to receive the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy which helps to cover the payroll of our employees. In addition, we have qualified for the Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy which now can be used to help cover utilities and other expenses for non-profit organizations. These subsidies have greatly reduced the amount it costs NCC to operate our ice plant and maintain required staffing levels. Because of this the Board has decided to keep the ice in and the club open until at least February 5. At that point further decisions will be made based on direction from the PHO. If restrictions are lifted on February 5, we will be able to resume and finish our fall leagues that were suspended in December. In the meantime, the Junior Program can continue and the club remains open for practice. Practice times need to be prebooked by clicking Book Now here on our Facebook page or by emailing our manager at [email protected]. Practice ice is available only to individuals or two members of the same household, who are current members of NCC. Back in June we held a Special General Meeting and passed a resolution to allow the club to borrow $40,000 under the Canada Emergency Business Account. These funds were crucial to the club opening in the fall. The government has now allowed for an additional $20,000 to be accessed and the Board of Directors, under guidance from our accountant, would like NCC to apply for this additional amount. This requires another Special General Meeting. Details of this meeting will be provided to our members in the next few weeks. We have and will continue to consider the health, safety, and interests of our membership in any decision made. The Board greatly appreciates the support of curlers and the willingness to follow the protocols that are in place. That is what allowed us to successfully open in November and will allow us to successfully finish our season if permitted to do so. Please contact me with any questions or comments you have. Thank you and stay safe. Brian McRory President, Nanaimo Curling Club [email protected]

Impact of PHO Orders on NCC Hello NCC Members, The Board of Directors and our Manager have reviewed yesterday’s orders from the Provincial Health Officer and Curl BC’s guidance on the orders. As a result, we are implementing, effective immediately, the following changes at our club:... Spectators are not permitted in the Nanaimo Curling Centre. This includes parents, guardians and family members of our junior curlers, 5th and 6th players of a team, and members of a bye team not curling that draw. Only players actively curling in a league that starts within 30 minutes will be allowed to enter the building. The upstairs Canada 150 Room, the Top of the House Lounge, and the Livewire Café are closed. After your game, please exit the building. These changes are to be in effect until midnight December 7 unless the orders are extended by the PHO. Curling itself continues here at the NCC. The changes implemented are a two week pause in our social interactions. NCC has a robust safety plan in place and has been ahead of the curve on items such as requiring masks while on the ice. Please always continue to keep 2m apart and wear your masks while in the building. We feel truly fortunate that we can curl in these difficult times. Protecting the health and safety of our members is always our top priority. By pausing all off-ice socializing at the club, we are limiting the risk to our members and doing our part to reduce the spread of the virus. If you have any questions or comments please contact me at [email protected]. See you on the ice. Brian McRory President, Nanaimo Curling Club
