Tooth Tip Tuesday! Dental fluoride combines with the minerals in your teeth to form a stronger, more acid resistant enamel. There are two ways that fluoride works to protect tooth enamel systemically and topically.... Systemically, fluoride works when teeth are developing in babies and children and is ingested in fluoridated water, foods or supplements prescribed by a dentist or pediatrician. Topical fluoride is contained in fluoride toothpaste, fluoride mouthwash and fluoride treatments administered at your dental office and work from the outside of the tooth when you brush and rinse. Systemically and topically, fluoride also helps prevent cavities by affecting the bacteria in plaque, making it less able to produce the acids that cause decay. https://www.dentalcare.com//patient/how-does-fluoride-work

Tooth Tip Tuesday! Studies suggest vaping may be better then cigarettes, as it does not produce secondhand smoke like tobacco. Vaping does not offer any benefits to dental health. Although long-term safety of e-cigarettes is not yet established, initial data indicates that e-cigarette vapour damages cells and lowers certain enzymes important in maintaining tissue health and preventing cancer.... Vaping can also lower salivary output over time. Saliva is required to counteract the effects of acid in food and drinks. As a result, some heavy smokers and vapers can still get decay even if they are brushing well.

Tuesday Tooth Tip! Three steps to preventing dental erosion: -Choose drinks that are low in acid. -Do not swish or hold high acid drinks in your mouth for long periods of time or suck on citrus fruits.... -It is best to consume foods and drinks high in acid at the end of mealtime while there is still plenty of saliva in your mouth to wash away sugars and acids. April is National Oral Health Month. To learn more about dental erosion and other oral health concerns, talk to your dentist and visit the Canadian Dental Association website at www.cda-adc.ca
