It's time to get back to doing what we love - singing! Our Christmas Concert was fun and then our holidays and celebrations were upon us. . Now it's back to rehearsals for all of us in Nanaimo Youth Choir and to planning our spring concerts. We look forward to a few new members joining our choirs this month too. It's always fun to welcome new friends to share our music. We will be auditioning accompanists soon - please refer any serious, advanced piano students to us if they would be interested in the experience of accompanying. We would love to give them the opportunity to make music with us. Remember also - we love to have new friends who love to sing! Come and express yourself in a musical way while making new friends and learning more about the joy of making music.

Nanaimo Youth Choir is working hard and we are looking forward to singing our Christmas Concert on Sunday, Dec. 15th. We hope you will come out to enjoy some Christmas selections and the soloists we have performing with us. We are excited to have Cindy Speelman playing carols and performing with the choir as well. We have a new instrument this year and that is Celtic Harp played beautifully by Joseph Clemotte. In addition, our soloist is an alumni member of NYC, Katrin Hannes...son. Playing our accompaniments is Rie Okamura, well known piano teacher and accompanist in Nanaimo. We invite you to come for the concert and then to the hall to visit and have goodies at our reception. The concert begins at 2:30 PM. It is at St. Andrew's United Church in the Old City Quarter, a beautiful place to sing. Tickets are available at the door for $15 and Children under 12 are free. We are starting to get excited about our Christmas performances and hope you will come and enjoy them. We love to sing at Christmas and our first performance will be as part of the 24th annual "Community Carol Festival ". We love to share in this evening of singing carols with the audience and the Pipe organ. There will be community choirs singing their own Christmas selections and the carols will keep things going as the choirs move to the front to share their music. It's a ...lovely evening full of the magic of Christmas and music. Please come along and take part. You'll meet your friends there too as it is a popular event. Nanaimo Youth Choir Mezzos had another fun filled camp to start our new season of singing. We feel so lucky to have the chance to be in such a beautiful place, renewing friendships and making new friends. The food, the games, the laughter and the singing make our hearts happy.

What will your choice be for a way to meet friends and learn something that will bring much joy along with the friendships? We hope you decide to come along to Nanaimo Youth Choir and sing with us. Many members have been with us for a while now, and some are quite new. One thing we all have in common is that we love to express ourselves through music and share the experiences together. Sometimes we travel and meet new friends, sometimes our performances are in our own communi...ty. In either case, we love the experiences we share. There are two age groups, our Junior Choir starts as young as 5 and goes to 11. If you already have some music in your life and are 10 or so, you could join our mezzo group that has singers from 9 to 16 yrs. Right now at the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music, registration fees are on special but only until Aug. 29th. After that, they are the regular costs. As Nanaimo Youth Choir gears up for a new year of singing, we are inviting children and young people to join us. All children are natural musicians and love to sing. Research has shown what a valuable experience participating in a choir, while growing up is, and how it benefits those who have the opportunity. We invite you to join us this year to build new friendships through music. Children will learn how to sing, read music and communicate through sharing the experience with others. This post is for instrumentalists who might not have thought about learning to sing. We would love to have you join us and add singing to your musical experience. Singing gives you a whole new dimension to your instrumental experience. If you sing, you can expect your musical understanding to be expanded, but not only that as when we sing, our ear is trained for better listening and intonation, our rhythmic sense is improved, sight reading becomes easier with more time spe...nt on it and finding the notes and producing them develops that capability. Text gives us another way of understanding, expressing and interpreting the music too. It expands our imagination and let's us hear the music in a different way. Instrumentalists often become used to making music alone or with an accompanist only. In a choir, the ensemble experience is a way of sharing and supporting each other through the music. Although our programs encourage beginners to music to become members of our Junior choir, today we are inviting students to join us who have already committed to music lessons and would enjoy expanding that knowledge and making new friends who share a love of music. Nanaimo Youth Choir is already making plans for fall. Will you be singing with us? We have had many great experiences in the past in Oregon at the Pacific International Children's Choral Festival two times and invitations back again. New York was our biggest trip ever to date and singing in Carnegie Hall was amazing, we will never forget the singing and the sights and sounds in that great city. Besides the travel and winning the Provincial Festival 8 times in a row, we really... love to make music together and form friendships with peers who also love music and working on being able to sing really well.
