*** Like Feng Bo, the mad monk, upheld righteousness and drove Qin out of the temple *** During the Southern Song Dynasty there were two famous Buddhist monks.... One was known as "Mad Monk" Ji Gong, the other as "Mad Monk" Feng Bo. Both are said to have become immortal and were revered by many. Feng Bo lived during the early years of the Southern Song Dynasty. He was wise and brave. He was famous in China for the brave gesture with which he "brushed Qin's face with a broom". Yue Fei was a heroic general who fought against Jin's army that was trying to invade China. Treacherous Prime Minister Qin Hui plotted against Yue Fei and had him imprisoned on false charges. Legend has it that Qin Hui went to the famous Ling Yin Temple to ask for a prediction of the future that would reveal to him how he should behave with Yue Fei. There he met Feng Bo. Feng Bo confronted Qin Hui and his entourage, and laughed out loud. Feng Bo asked Qin Hui, "Cao Cao was a great hero, but where is he today?" Qin Hui asked the reason for this question. Feng Bo replied, The principles of heaven are clear. Loyalty and betrayal are self-evident. Goodness and wickedness will be rewarded and punished. You, as Prime Minister, have a lot of power. Why do you want to kill a man who is important to his country as a pillar for a home? Does the security of the nation mean anything to you? " Qin Hui asked, "Who is the pillar of the country?" Feng Bo replied seriously, "General Yue Fei!" The merciless Qui Hui didn't seem touched at all by his words. Feng Bo laughed out loud and said, What a fool! Repent now before it's too late. " That said, he abruptly grabbed an old broom and repeatedly swiped it over the Prime Minister's face. Then boldly he disappeared in a flash. Having endured all this, Qin Hui left the temple, looking defeated and embarrassed. This episode became well known, and for the people the mad monk embodied their respect and love for Yue Fei, as well as their desire to punish the evil Prime Minister. Hence the people promoted the righteous "mad monk" to the rank of immortal.
