OPP investigating suspicious fire in Napanee Meghan Balogh Napanee Guide Greater Napanee fire crews were called to a building on fire at around 5 a.m. on Tuesday.... The fire moved through the end unit of a commercial building on Palace Road. "We got a call reporting smoke coming from a structure," said Greater Napanee Deputy Fire Chief, John Koenig at the scene. "When we pulled up here there was heavy smoke along the roof line of this unit on the end." The fire was contained to the unit that houses Palace Market, an antique and collectables store at the complex on Palace Road near the 401 eastbound on-ramp. It took crews over an hour to extinguish the flames. "Most of the fire was contained to the roof, but unfortunately most of the (Palace Market) unit was destroyed," said Koenig. "It is a cathedral ceiling and the fire was between the ceiling and the roof, so it was difficult to reach it." The bridal shop next to the antique market was not affected by the fire, according to Koenig. Napanee OPP was on site for much of the morning and into the afternoon, investigating what they believe to be suspicious circumstances surrounding the fire. At noon on Tuesday fire crews were waiting for lumber to be delivered so that they could reinforce the roof in order to access the area affected by the fire to further the investigation. According to a release from the Napanee OPP, "The Napanee OPP Crime Unit, Napanee Fire Department and the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management are working together to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident." No injuries were reported, and the investigation is ongoing. [email protected] See more

HOCKEY: The Napanee Raiders continued their more than yearlong domination of the Amherstview Jets on Tuesday night. With a convincing 8-0 victory in the Provinc...ial Junior Hockey League game in Napanee, the Raiders have now won their past six head-to-head regular season meetings and have gone 10 games without losing (8-0-2) to the Jets in the regular season. The last time the Jets beat the Raiders in the regular season was on Sept. 26, 2015, but Amherstview did take one game from Napanee in their Empire B Junior C Hockey League best-of-seven semifinal, with that coming on Feb. 20. This time, the Raiders used an impressive balanced attack to down the Jets, with the goal-scoring split between six players and no player collecting more than two points. And they outshot the visitors by 30, 53-23. Veterans Cullen Hinds and Austin Boulard each scored twice for the Raiders, with Hinds netting the game-winning goal at 11:29 of the first period and an insurance goal at 14:59 of Napanee's three-goal second period that lifted the Raiders into a 4-0 lead. Also scoring for Napanee were Justynn Steven, Devon King, Griffen Conger and Kevin Lanoix. Goaltender Matt Loveys gained the shutout, his second consecutive and his third of the season. He also blanked the Campbellford Rebels 8-0 last Friday night. Loveys' shutout string has reached 128 minutes and 18 seconds, as he was in goal as the Raiders downed the Rebels 7-1 on Saturday, Oct. 29, with the only Campbellford goal coming at 11:42 of the third period. The win improved Napanee's Tod Division second-place record to 11-5-0 and opened a seven-point gap between the Raiders and the third-place Gananoque Islanders and Picton Pirates, both 7-7-1. The unbeaten Port Hope Panthers lead the division at 14-0-0.

HOCKEY: Everyone's heard of Friday Night Lights, right? Well, how about Friday Night Bites? That's what the Campbellford Rebels found in their first Friday nigh...t game this Provincial Junior Hockey League season. The host Napanee Raiders routed the Rebels 8-0, handing the visitors their 13th loss in a row to start the season. And for the record, Campbellford has lost seven times on a Saturday, four times on a Sunday, once on a Thursday and now a Friday Night Bites defeat. And the Raiders have been particularly hard on the cellar-dwelling Rebels, having beaten them four times (more than any other team in the Tod Division) and by an aggregate score of 39-4. Overall this season, the Rebels have been outscored 100-19. Napanee improved to 10-5-0 to strengthen their hold on second place. The Raiders lead the third-place Gananoque Islanders by five points but have played one more game than Gan. Justynn Steven scored twice to lead the Raiders, with Tyler Ignazzitto, Cullen Hinds, Matthew Scott, Riley Steeves, Devon King and Tristan Nugent adding single goals. Tristan's goal was the second-year forward's first as a Raider in five games with the club.
