What can you do to support yourself during this difficult time? The reports are clear that it is your own immune system that will be needed to fight this virus should you contract it. So, don’t just wait this out. You can act now to build your immunity, and here are some simple tips for doing that: - Get a good night’s sleep - and if a good night’s sleep is challenging, take a nap in the afternoon (but don’t stress about this one if you don’t sleep well!)... - Eat as healthily as possible plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. - Avoid simple sugars which suppress your immune system. - Don’t feed the fear. When we are in fear (activating fight or flight, sympathetic nervous system)) we are turning our immune system down (fighting the flu isn’t top priority when your body thinks it needs to fight the tiger!) - Meditate. To assist yourself in regulating fear impulses and negative thought patterns, and to instead turn on the ‘rest and digest’ arm of your nervous system (parasympathetic nervous system), which allows for optimal immune system functioning, try a daily meditation. If you are new to meditation, there are lots of online guided meditations. Simply google ‘guided meditation’. - Laugh lots! Again, laughter decreases the stress response and boosts your immunity. So if you’re going to Netflix binge, find something funny to watch. - Go outside. A walk in nature is not only good for the soul, it is another fantastic boost to your immune system. - Keep moving - gentle stretches, yoga (again, you can find good links for a gentle practice online), and if you’re up to it, go for a walk or hike. - Drink plenty of fluids.
