Today is National Wear Red Day, a day of awareness for women’s heart health. Women’s have unique risk factors for heart disease, and it can often go undiagnosed for years. Women of marginalized communities are at an even greater risk. The good news is that advances in research and increased awareness have made great strides. All eyes are on Wiarton Willie and Shubecanadie Sam. today. It’s Imagination’s 20th Anniversary Groundhog Day, and these little guys are going to tell us our fates, for the next few months. As unnerving as it is to rely on rodents to foresee our futures, even temporarily, Groundhog Day has been a tradition in Canada for over sixty years. With an average accuracy rate of 37%, they aren’t the most reliable sources, but with Christmas and New Year’s long gone, maybe their value ...lies more in entertainment than truth. Unless they tell us that winter’s ending. In which case, it’s amazing what these little fellas can do! * * * * #groundhogday2021 #willheseehisshadow? #readyforspring #imaginationgroupca See more

It’s #NationalPieDay! This might seem contrary to Imagination’s January theme of health and wellness, but self-indulgence can be self-care. It’s a mindful act, to craft a beautiful pie with someone special. To relish the silkiness of pastry dough, the fragrance of sweet or savory fillings bubbling away on the stove. To delight in the beauty of your shared handiwork as you lift your crispy golden creation from the hot oven. Especially nourishing is sharing a piece of your pipi...ng hot pie with someone you love. Take some time today to practice self-indulgence. It’s healthy! * * * * * #nationalpieday #selfcare #selfindulgence #imaginationgroupca See more

Louis Riel Day, November 16th, is the anniversary of Riel’s execution by the Canadian government in 1885. This day in 2020 is of particular importance to Imagination, as we celebrate our twentieth anniversary as a Metis owned organization, and own with pride our blood ties to the Metis resistance. Before his execution, Riel led Metis people in the Northwest Resistance, which was a stand against the Canadian government’s encroachment on Metis rights, and way of life. The Metis... were defeated at the siege of Batoche, Saskatchewan, and the Canadian government captured Riel. He was put on trial, convicted of treason and executed. As a result, Metis people across Canada were labeled as traitors, and for many it was necessary to hide their culture and heritage, some even passing as non-Indigenous for generations. Despite this oppression, Metis people found ways to preserve Metis culture, and passed it on to current generations. Metis courage and resilience is testament to the courage of the ancestors who risked all to preserve the Metis way of life, and they will always have our boundless gratitude. * * * * *louisrieldaycanada #nationallouisrielday #metishero #indigenousbusiness #metisbusiness #indigenousyyc #imaginationgroupca #fromseedtoceremony See more

We who have not fought will never know the tremendous courage that it takes, to lay down one’s life for values that are loved above all other things. This Remembrance Day, Imagination honours those who did not survive, those who did, and those who still fight for freedom. Let us take this day as a reminder of what we owe to those who fought, and bear witness to the possibility of peace and reconciliation. As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest a...ppreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. ~J.F.K. * * * * #lestweforget #remembranceday #freedom #gratitude #november11th

November 14th is World Diabetes Day. This day is of particular interest to Imagination, as Indigenous peoples living in Canada are among the highest risk populations for diabetes and related complications. The causes of diabetes in Indigenous populations are complex, and include medical, social, and cultural contributions. The data we have on this topic is complicated, and can be confusing. One thing we know for certain is that, prior to the 1940s, diabetes among Indigenous p...opulations in Canada was rare. Diet is only one piece of the puzzle, but we’ve found a few resources that can help. Follow the links for traditional and diabetes friendly recipes.
