"The increased interest has affected the way Nick Rempel and his three partners at Natural Collective CSA do their work. The farmers, who work on a five-acre plot outside Niverville, typically sell half of what they grow through their CSA; they sell the other half at markets and to local restaurants. Because they aren’t sure what market and restaurant sales will be like this year, the Natural Collective farmers are almost doubling the number of CSA shares they offer, from 80 ...to 150. "The demand was just massive," Rempel says. "People are more locally minded because the pandemic is bringing up a sense of civic responsibility, but they’re also just nervous about where their food is coming from and they want to get connected to a primary source"... One of the ways Natural Collective CSA will respond to the pandemic is by pre-packaging CSA shares every week, rather than allowing members to bring their own bags. As a farm that wants to work toward waste-free options, it’s a "fairly annoying" move, Rempel says, but one he and his colleagues feel is necessary. Overall, Rempel is optimistic about the coming season. "I have some worries about doubling the CSA because it’s a big obligation 150 families," he says. "That gives me a bit of pause every once in a while, but it’s an exciting prospect to feed that many families."

WOW! Thanks to all our customers old and new for their support this year. We can't wait to start sharing the bounty If you're still looking for a CSA to join https://csamanitoba.org/ is a great resource. Or, you can find us weekly at the South Osborne Farmers' Market by Fireweed Food Co-op starting June 17. We're still waiting on updates from some of our other markets and their plans for this year.
