Nature and Attachment Survey Study: A couple of my amazing Naropa MA wilderness therapy students are taking on a study of trauma and attachment and we would be most grateful if you completed the survey and forwarded this link to your communities touched by 'mountain traumas'. As many of you know, this is an area of specialization for me and the more data that we can collect the better. Feel free to connect with me if you have any questions and thank you for your participation...! Hi folks! My name is Brooke and I have teamed up with a cohort member, Jess, to create our capstone. We are collecting data for the capstone, and we are hoping you will consider filling out this short 16 questions survey. here is a little bit about what we are doing: Jessica Bailey and Brooke Shaffer are conducting research and exploring why certain individuals are more susceptible to a secure or insecure attachment after a traumatic experience in nature. The researcher’s theory is that childhood attachment style, alongside demographic features, may point to an individual’s ability to either re-connect or avoid nature following a traumatic outdoor experience. The assessment is also designed to assess coping strategies and changes in confidence while engaging in the natural environment following a traumatic event." We are creating a training in hopes to provide more support for guides, search and rescue workers, and anyone working in the outdoor industry. Your answers will help provide us the information to best serve this population, and understand a little more about why some people are more affected by "mountain trauma" than others. Please reach out with any comments or questions. If you know people who would find this interesting, please do pass it along because we are trying to reach as many folks as possible. with warmth, Brooke Here is the link to the survey https://forms.gle/jeSoY73fSWjgCUkD6 See more

I couldn't agree more. "I believe that the greatest challenge of our age is how we as a species and a civilization overturn the assumption that human history and social and economic progress can be divorced from the natural world and its webs of interdependence." https://psyche.co//observing-nature-in-your-backyard-is-no

My friend and former colleague, Kim Allen is doing nature-based health research and is looking for participants: "I am in the final phase of my PhD in Integrative Medicine with Saybrook University and my focus is Nature-Based Healthcare. The study is evaluating spending time walking in nature for adults ages 25-65 with symptoms of mild to moderate depression. The study is quantitative so I will be comparing an interventional and control group. Participants in each group will walk for 120-minutes for a period of six weeks. The difference will be in the instructions that the interventional group participants receive compared to the instructions that the control group participants will receive." Are you interested in helping out with this valuable research?

And the people stayed home. And read books, and listened, and rested, and exercised, and made art, and played games, and learned new ways of being, and were still. And listened more deeply. Some meditated, some prayed, some danced. Some met their shadows. And the people began to think differently. "And the people healed. And, in the absence of people living in ignorant, dangerous, mindless, and heartless ways, the earth began to heal. "And when the danger passed, and the people joined together again, they grieved their losses, and made new choices, and dreamed new images, and created new ways to live and heal the earth fully, as they had been healed." ~Kitty O'Meara

The Guardian is absolutely nailing this one. Interconnection- It's a thing. Some of my favorite quotes from the article: "the immediate priority was to protect... people from the coronavirus and prevent its spread. But our long-term response must tackle habitat and biodiversity loss We are intimately interconnected with nature, whether we like it or not. If we don’t take care of nature, we can’t take care of ourselves. And as we hurtle towards a population of 10 billion people on this planet, we need to go into this future armed with nature as our strongest ally. The separation of health and environmental policy is a dangerous delusion. Our health entirely depends on the climate and the other organisms we share the planet with. "We cannot go back to business as usual. So true. See more

thank you Mary Oliver... WHEN I AM AMONG TREES by Mary Oliver When I am among the trees, especially the willows and the honey locust,... equally the beech, the oaks, and the pines, they give off such hints of gladness. I would almost say that they save me, and daily. I am so distant from the hope of myself, in which I have goodness, and discernment, and never hurry through the world but walk slowly, and bow often. Around me the trees stir in their leaves and call out, Stay awhile. The light flows from their branches. And they call again, It’s simple, they say, and you, too, have come into the world to do this, to go easy, to be filled with light, and to shine.
